Re: fishing on bristol channel

What part of the channel are you thinking about fishing? For the upper channel, Weston super mare to the Severn bridges, i'd recommend some fairly heavy gear. 5-7oz rods & plenty of leads. Strong tides with lots of mud & rocks are the norm. Due to the tides & rocky shore it's not really safe to fish alone at a lot of venues either (Always carry a mobile phone). Sand point & Brean Down are good examples of this. Species wise, you're probably looking at Codling, Conger & Thornbacks depending on venue. As for bait, Ragworm & Squid usually work well. Good luck.

Mate - it can be really good in the channel when you are after the rays - always manage a few of them and they fight like stink - then release and enjoy the whole experience.

That said - the truth is that the channel is fishing very poorly this year and really has been some of the worst for many a year Im afraid. If you are going to make the trip Id leave it until May when the change of fish has happened - and then you can target rays, conger, bass, whiting, codling and flatties.

Worth looking at The Bristol Channel fishing website - that has plenty of details on the fishing marks and what to expect - but as Greenhart has said make sure you fish with someone and are fully aware of the channel - it can be a very dangerous place for all of us but providing you are sensible youll be fine.

Tommy

Re: fishing on bristol channel

The baits needed for the ray is sandeel or squid sandeel wraps the ray should be around next week but for numbers of ray and a good possibility of bass the first week in may would be much better.
