Lanzarote Fisher is on a distinguished road
Lanzarote, 20th Sept '08

Yesterday I went out fishing on one of our boats (the Margarita Segundo) as it was the Marina Rubicón Tournament in Lanzarote, a perfect excuse to run away from our wives and go fishing with some friends.
It was the second (and final) day of the tournament, and we were quite excited and looking forward to it.
Here's a picture of the start:

The day before, our skipper David had seen a white marlin jumping just 100 metres away from the boat, but it never got to bite the lure. In any case he thought it'd be a good idea to try the same location, about 4 miles west from the town called El Golfo.
On the way there Alberto, one of my friends, spotted the water spray of a whale, so we headed the boat that way, only to see that the whale was surrounded by tuna. We prepared a couple of lures (we only had marlin lures on the water) and sailed across, but not a single strike. Tried again, same result...and even one third time... nothing. It was about half past ten and the tide was changing, so we'd better fish soon or things would get more difficult.
We had a call from a local fisherman friend telling us where he had been catchig tuna earlier on, hoping to find a marlin. Meanwhile we could hear through the radio various strikes of white marlin from a few other boats that were also in the competition.
Here's me watching the lures about midday:

After a couple of hours more of trolling, we saw more whales and plenty of dolphins, but and no fish. We knew that we would have to wait till about 4 pm for our next opportunity. However, our only catch was finally a skipjack tuna at 16:50 that made a great bbq today.
Here's Alberto with the catch:

The summary of the tournament (more than sixty boats participating in two days) was two blue marlin and seven white marlin. Pretty poor compared to previous years.

great report!

Im just a few miles across the water in Corralejo, and i have to say.
The fishing all round has been very poor this year. Even the Majoreros are saying this year has been dire on most local fishing... Maybe the Autumn swells will bring in some good catches!

Yeah, it's a shame really, as marlin fishing was great last summer. Our main boat has only caught (and released) three this summer, whereas last summer we had over twenty caught.
Tuna fishing has not been great neither, even though our bottom fishing boat has been doing pretty good latelly, with also plenty of barracudas, bluefish and some wahoo.
