Cool Corralejo, Fuerteventura. 14th July 2008

So I get in from work around 2am and check the weather forecast. The wind that was supposed to die down, still hasnt and its blowing a steady 17 knots till Wednesday... Bummer.
But I had already psyched myself up for some fishing so I set the alarm clock and turned in for the night (in reality i just nudged the Mrs and said "get me up at seven yeah?")

7am came and a nudge from my wife had me trudging like a zombie to get the half bag of prawns out of the freezer from my last trip out. The clock read 7.05 and i looked out of the window, first light had already arrived so i skipped the usual cup of tea, grabbed my tackle backpack & rod (camera too this time!) and jumped on my bike. Luckily the ocean is all down hill from 'mi casa' otherwise this trip probably wouldnt have got off to a good start, half way there I realised the beer had barely worn off from last night

One look at the sun rising over Lobos Island and any hint of a hangover melted away,

My tackle backpack was in a bit of a mess from my last trip out, but as i was first to arrive at the harbour wall I had my choice of spots, and casually started setting up. I had a line in the water by 7.30am and sat back wondering what the day would bring. It wasnt long before my first catch.

A Vieja (a local parrotfish), These are extreamly popular in the canaries, and on just about every menu in town.

Id been casting about 10 metres out from the rocks, at a depth of about 5 metres. but if the viejas were biting this far from the rocks, id need to cast out further if I wanted some bigger tastier supper. I set my hooks a little higher off the sea floor and casted out about 20metres from the rocks. Which, with the wind against me, it was about as far as I could go today.
About an hour passed with no joy, the i started getting more nibbles..
First a little pufferfish, Then a big bite that got away. Then these three came in relatively quick succession..

In Spanish (or more accuratley Canarian tongue) These are Sama Sarpa, Chopa & Sama Salema Im not sure exactly the names in English but Bream springs to mind, and from previous experience they taste pretty good.

The Sun was well into the sky now, and the boat traffic was begining to pick up, so I decided to call it a day, but not before gutting and cleaning todays lunch..

Just enough time for a bacon sarnie and a small beer on the seafront before midday... The fishing wasnt as great as ive had at that spot. But you cannot grumble if you stomach doesnt!!!
