| Fishing Report from South Texas Howdy, boys! Just found this forum again after I lost the link. This past week before Mother Nature put us in the deep freeze-I have 12" icicles hanging off the roof, which is extremely unusual for South Texas-I managed to get out with a buddy of mine, and we had a good day. The wind was blowing pretty hard, which is normal for here, so we had to change our tactics a bit but still caught fish. The water was about 55 degrees F which is a little cold, but it was sunny. I started throwing a blue glimmer(white with a bluish tint and black specks soft stickbait rigged wacky(see picture-much easier than trying to explain it and yes, that goofy looking rig does work ![]() And on the third or fourth cast I thought I was hung up for a second until the line started to move and ended up landing the biggest smallmouth bass I have caught to date, about 2 1/2 lbs: ![]() Smallmouth like cooler water which is a rare commodity around here, especially in the summer, so being able to catch them is a real treat. Anyway, we battled the wind as long as we could stand it and headed for sheltered water. All told we caught 7 fish, and my buddy got fish of the day, a largemouth bass that weighed about 3 pounds. All told it was a great day on the water! |

| Re: Fishing Report from South Texas Thanks, guys! Robm, we do have alligator gar, although I don't fish for them. The ones that do use saltwater tackle and catch some monsters. A cople of years ago about this time I was fishing a lake south of San Antonio and apparently the gar were spawning. There were a lot of weed mats and they were laying up on top, and there were a bunch of them. They looked like a green torpedo when they took off. I avoided the icicles by staying inside! Nice looking fish, maghouse! The foot control trolling motors obviously keep your hands free, but there are times they come in real handy. The trip before this last one we were dealing with some strong winds so I let the boat blow into some flooded trees to hold it in place. About the time my buddy asked how are we going to get a fish out of there naturally one hit. It wrapped up in the trees on the far side from where the boat was so we had to go all the way around the tree patch to get to it. With both hands holding the rod the foot control was the only way I could move the boat. BaggieRich, come on over-we've got some great bass fishing here in te states! Pike Pirate, from May to October South Texas is usually very hot. We adjust our tactics by going extremely early and fishing until noon or so or go late and fish after dark. Being out on the water with no shade and no wind with the temperature about 104 gets old real quick. Our winter high temps average around 65, but we do get some cold weather. Usually one day of winter weather, usually ice. This year we got three-so far |
