Peacock Bass CR

The previous day, I asked my friend Matt if he wanted to return to our old water hole which had been overfished. After much persuation, he agreed.

We reached the place at about 8am. Within my first 2 casts of my 3D Flat Crank, i received a strong take but missed the hook up. The same thing happened again the next 2 casts. "Never mind." i thought to myself.

Within the next 10min, my friend hooked up a nice peacock bass. Roughly about 1lb in size. They may be small, but they're one hell of a good fighter.

Next it was my turn. I saw a huge swirl not too far out and casted towards it. One crank on my reel and the fish took it. I gave a hard strike and line was going out. ZZZZZzzzzZZZ!! I fought it for about 2 minutes but it still wasnt surfacing. "This must be a biggie", I told Matt. And true enough, When it surfaced, it was indeed a biggie. 3lb in size.

After this, we hit a few more regular sized peacocks not really worth taking photos of.
At about 11am, the rangers came. We left the place for a break at the nearby food centre. As it was still early, we decided to go for a second round. We retied our leaders, chose new lures and we were back at peacock fishing again.

My friend had told me once that spinners are really effective against peacocks but i never really tried it even though I had about 3. Well this was a good time to test it, i guess. On my first cast with my spinner, I hit something. Gave a hard strike and the fight was on. It was a pretty good fighter. Landed it and it measured 2lb in size. My first fish on spinner!

We moved on and spotted one lonesome peacock guarding its nest. We tried all sorts of lures ranging from minnows to spinners to rubber lures but to no avail. In the end, my friend took out a minnow and dangled it right in front of the peacock's face. The peacock was extremely cautious, taking only small nibbles at the lure. Finally, it whacked the lure and took off. Landed it and measured almost 3lb.

Ask any angler in Singapore and he would tell you that this certain reservoir has already been overfished. What they dont know is that the small offsprings have grown big.

Anyway, I will be returning again on Tuesday. Please await my CR!

Re: Peacock Bass CR

Today was killer!! We started off fishing at 8.30am. Action was very slow until about 9.30am. The first fish was landed by my friend, roughly about 1.5lb. Landed on a Bass Pro Shops minnow.

Next fish was landed by my friend again. This peacock came out of nowhere and ambushed his lure. Line was peeling out. At first we didnt think it was a peacock because of its immense strength but it turned out to be a big peacock. Roughly about 2.5lb.

Now it was my turn. Spotted a lonesome peacock and casted my Rapala Countdown in front of its face. It inhaled the lure and the fight was on. This was a really big one, racing left to right and refused to surface.Eventually landed and was 2.7lb in weight.

After this fish, the most unexpectable thing happened. This reservoir has been know to keep a few small tarpons around 3lb in weight. My friend was using 3D Flat Crank and out of nowhere, there was a silver flash! There was an immense swirl and the fish turned to its side. IT WAS A HUGE TARPON!! The minute it got hooked, its whole body cleared the water. I could say it was about 5kg in weight. The bad part was that when it jumped, the line burst. . We were so close to landing probably the biggest tarpon ever landed in Singapore!!!! And following the burst was a whole string of cursing and swearing by all of us. It was simply amazing!

Although our spirits were low after missing our chance at the tarpon, we continued fishing and were rewarded by a few other peacocks.

(sorry about the face )

On Saturday, we'll be trying for tarpon at the same place at night. And hopefully we'll land something huge.
