Still searching for a bit of Ruffe..... Well as I still require the elusive Ruffe for the species hunt, I went back to try another length of the Kennet & Avon Canal near Devizes. This time I decided to try the Canal between All Cannings & Allington. Oddly enough the last Ruffe I caught also came from a place called Allington, however that was on the river Medway in Kent. Found a spot to park the car, loaded up all my gear & set off along the boat Moorings to find a nice swim. After walking for about 500yds & regretting leaving my tackle trolly at home, I eventually found a fishy looking spot. The Canal was slightly narrower here & I should be able to reach some overhanging bushes on the far bank using my pole. Plonked my kit on the ground, just as the heavens opened up & it poured with rain. It took me about 30 seconds to set my brolly up & get the spike into the hard ground. But by then I was soaked... Mixed up some Sensas Magic groundbait with some brown crumb & a few pinkies & fed two areas of the canal. Some under the far bank bushes & some down the centre boat channel. Made up my pole at 11 metres with a small pole float, 2lb hooklength & size 20 hook baited with a single maggot. I set the float depth at about 5ft so that the bait was fished hard on the bottom & cast out to the far bank swim. "Bugger" the float must need more shot because it wouldn't cock. Lifted my pole to discover that it had'nt cocked because a fish had grabbed the bait. A nice size Skimmer Bream. Rebaited & cast out again, only to catch another. This continued for the next hour, & so did the rain. I was amazed at how hard these Bream fought, much better than the average stillwater fish. However I had come here to catch a Ruffe, so I decided to try the middle of the Canal which I had also continued to feed. Had a bite almost instantly & lifted a small brown fish out of the water. Bingo.... Must be a Ruffe I thought!!! WRONG.... It was a bloody Gudgeon. Anyway to cut a long story short, I fished on until about 6pm, & cuaght loads of fish including some good Roach, Perch, Gudgeon, Bream & Rudd. But still no Ruffe I just can't believe what it's costing me to attempt to catch one of these little fish. To date, two trips including bait, Groundbait, petrol & daytickets etc, about £30 & all for 1.5 points. Anyway, except for the rain, I had a good days fishing & ended up with another good netfull of fish. Oh Well, back to the Drawing Board.... There must be a Ruffe out there somewhere with my name on it. __________________ One man's fish is another man's poissons http://www.deepsea.co.uk http://www.wildtrout.org

Re: Still searching for a bit of Ruffe..... Unlucky on the Ruffe Ian, but it is amazing how much fight the canal fish have, I find it quiet enjoyable down on the canal. I wonder if the ground bait is bringing in the bigger fish and scaring the Ruffe away, When twiddler and I fished there she was using ground bait and only got a couple of ruffe whereas I was only feeding maggots and fishing the middle and had nearly a dozen, I wondered if they are a shy fish as the canal holds perch and pike and I believe ruffe is a favourite food of these two predators. Better luck next time( if there is a next time) Mike

Re: Still searching for a bit of Ruffe..... Dear Sir, As you are an experienced angler, you might be able to give me some advice. Everytime I go fishing at the K&A canal, I get pestured by this little enoying fish called ruffe. As you seem to be able to avoid catching them, you might let me into your special secret of how NOT to catch them. Your sincerley Claudia aca ''not another bloody ruffe?'' Well done on the a nice bag again, see I never catch THAT many down there... __________________ There is certainly something in angling that tends to produce a serenity of the mind." - Washington Irving
