high and dry

well i was back in my favourite place fishing for them illusive zander and i was really buzzing after my first double of the season the week before last .
i had to change the drain i wanted to fish and drove round and looked a a couple of venues but i was not sure where to drop in .
the first job of the day was to catch a few baits and soon i had my float gear out and started in vain to catch a few baits but it was not to be how i had planned it and afyter an hour and a half no fish had been caught .
so i moved as at first i thought i might be where i was but the next swimwas just the same.
so scratching my head i thought about it and made a further move (third time lucky) with the result .
time was getting on and i had to make a decission whether to fish on or shoot down to the local tackle shop in downham howletts and again they had done me proud with a good selection of course baits i grab a couple of packs of roach and some eel section and made my way around various spots that might give me a chance of a zed of two .
i made my decission where i was going to fish and got myself sorted and base camp was soon set up .
i change my tactics a bit and fished one on a ledger paternoster fished down to my left close in
the second rod was set up with a basic fox ledger stem and set over to the far bank ,and the third rod i fished a eel section popped up of the lead 18inches and was fished at the bottom of the inside shelf about a third of the way out .
soon the brewmiester had the kettle on and i settle back for a good evening session and night.

as dusked decended i noticed the lack of fish topping in the margins and was not sure what state the weather was in as i had not checked the barometer as i normally do .
so a quick text to fishypaul and he gladly gave me the info i required (thanks paul ) sure enough my first thoughts were comfirmed and we were in to a high pressure this was going to make fishing with deads very hard indeed as i like to use lives during high pressures as i like a bait working .
during the early evening i kept busy moving and twitching my baits to try and hope a zed was in the mood but it was not to be .
i gave the rods a final cast out before retiring for the night and hoped i would get woken by a run during the early hours by a monster zed but again nothing happened.
i awoke early and had a good look but again nothing seemed to be topping which i find strange for early morning .
so i made the decissions to pack up early and take the oppotunity to drive around from place to place to look for new area,s i want to tackle .and i also wanted to take a few photo,s of various drains to .
once all this was done i made my way back home

Re: high and dry

oh i meant to mention a that i saw some thing very unsual in the margins after dark which at first i was very surprised as i had never seen one before in fresh water and that was a crab it was at least 6 inches acoss the shell .
but after a chat to a enviroment agent worker he informed me it was a mitten crab and they have been found in the great ouse and various ressies but he said that was the first one which has shown up in this drain to his knowledge apparently they are a pest and the burrow holes ointo the banks and if you get to many they can become a pest .
i have to say it certainly surprised me as they are alot bigger than i thought not sure if they can be eaten may be someone can tell me please

Re: high and dry

Unlucky there on the blank Kev but as Paul said, there is a double waiting round the corner with 'Baitmaster' written all over it
