Smile good old times remembered

Well after recent threads on fave music/ childhood TV show etc I went up to parents. Thinking a lot about the past

So on Tuesday night took daughter up to the pond by the pub

And took her sticklebacking (yes I was still trying for the hunt)
So with my daughter armed with a net she started bagging up, at least 2 different species of them as well, some with red bellies and big 5 spined beasties

Me well I was still trying now with a size 22 and ½ maggot but they just weren’t having it!!!!

katie on the log that has been fallen over this stream as long as I can remember

picture of her catch above.............................,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, ,,,,,,,,..................................picture of my catch above ;-0

Then took daughter for a walk over Epsom common where I used to almost live as a kid during the summer hols, building trakker bike runs, shelters and dens with my brothers, and also spent many an hour avoiding the bailiff on the stew pond as we hunted the great roach and perch that this small pond held
Well what a difference 28 yrs have made, the pond still looks the same, small island, broken trees etc but now the banks are reinforced and there are some concrete bases for disabled and definite pegs on the banks, whilst wandering around saw a few big fish jumping and on asking now find pond has a good head of tech, bream and carp, so plans for the wandle are now dropped and altered to a quick fish here instead

Thurs morning woke early(easy as dad, who’s hearing is deteriating still listens to shipping forecast at 5.30am, why??? As always lived 40mile from the sea ) so after raiding fridge as I always used to for brekkie, mmmmm cold pizza , and coffee downed , I get to pond for 6am, easier now as drive instead of cycling, but its a new first as fishing here with a hangover!(instead of drinking smuggled longlife cans on bank as a kid)
Barrier to car park still shut so parked on roadside and walked through.

Getting to the pond I found a group of about 12 “Hoodies” all with attitude, whose main game was to try and stone the seagulls and heron, they didn’t really trouble me, as I kept head down and mixed up some ground bait and plumbed up, but they tried a bit by throwing stones my way, they left about 6.40am ,final words were "lets go find a swan to kill!1" guess a few of them were only about 13 as well!!!!!!!!!.

So after all this disturbance i sorted out my head from survival from these muppets and settled down to fish properly, at 7am about 6 other anglers turned up so guess that’s when gate opens
There were a couple of youngsters who acted so much like we used too as they were desperate to avoid anyone who looked “official” and were all over the place, dead funny to watch and so much better than the earlier idiots

This is my swim as you can see pond is pretty small.

was fishing just infront of near lillies

There were tench bubbles all around my float for the first hour but I just couldn’t get one but did end up with about a dozen skimmers, also had a really good carp tail up in swim but that missed my bait as well,

Left about 10.30am as had to recover kids, luckily I missed bailiff(as obviously still have this skill ) so cant say how much it was to fish either(free for me), but I will be definately be back as saw a few nice carp caught(all on boilie and ledger) and have been told of a confirmed 22lber
But I would say security of cars here could be an issue but is a nice enough pond to fish

Later in eve took both daughter and son up to “stickleback creek”

but there were none to be seen only a handful of dead ones(guess something been poured into water), so although we had a jam jar full eve before I still don’t have one for the hunt, and not sure if patience will allow for one either

but had a cracking couple of days remenicing

dave

Glad i'm not the only one struggling to catch a stickleback. Looks a nice little venue. I always find that when I go back to childhood haunts, they are never the same. I used to fish a local stream for gudgeon. Me & my mates were convinced they were baby Barbel & were always trying for a big one. Now that stream is totally silted up with no fish at all...

Re: good old times remembered

Fantastic write up mate! It does you good to look back once in a while. Times are great when you're a nipper, no hassles like what we've got now, but you're adding to your kids memories of childhood by doing stuff like this. They'll love you for it
