Two Days Fishing In Dorset

Day One - Warmwell Lakes

After several weeks of my son asking me to take him coarse fishing I gave in this week and took him to Warmwell lakes on Monday. We arrived at about 4pm and was advised by the tackle shop to give Kingfisher lake a try. He also recommended that we use floatfished Madras pellets as they were catching well. We had a walk around the lake and chatted to a few anglers, most had caught a few decent fish so we found a spot and set up. Kingfisher lake is in the middle of a three lake complex and is a long "0" shape with a peninsula up the middle that almost splits it in two. The backwater on the right is shaded by overhanging trees with a couple of islands. There is very little plant life in the lake such as lillies etc.

We set up at the top end of the backwater in the trees and groundbaited a couple of spots, one for me and one for my son Tyler. We tried the pellets but they fell apart instantly so I resorted to corn and luncheon meat while Tyler was happy to hook out small roach using maggots. Due to my lack of luck when it comes to fishing I set up on a 13' float rod with 4lb line while Ty used a similar set up but with 6lb line. Half an hour in I wished I had used stronger gear when I briefly hooked something sizable, but I carried on with the light gear.

Tyler was happy with the small stuff and I was catching roach upto 1lb and all of them in great condition. Then I hooked what seemed like the Loch Ness Monster on my light gear. After playing it for 20 minutes (yes really) and pulling it out of the tree roots twice I banked a lovely common carp of 6lb 4oz taken on luncheon meat.

Now that might not sound like a big fish to many of you but I have been fishing for 25 years and have still not caught a coarse fish bigger than that. My time will come one day. After help from the angler next door with unhooking, weighing and photographs the fish was returned non the worse for its experience. We carried on fishing with plenty more roach then just before we were going to pack up I hooked something much bigger. There was no chance of turning it round as it went off through the tree roots then it snapped the line.

That'll teach me not to use my carp rod and heavy line when fishing a carp water.

Day Two

We fished Luckfield Lake in Broadbayne yesterday as we had loads of bait left. This time I used the carp rod and 8lb line with a float as always. Same baits as the day before but no carp about. Whatever I used it was mobbed by small roach, even big cubes of meat. After a couple of hours of endless small roach and rudd I tried the cat buiscuits that I had added to the groundbait with instant success, a 1lb roach. All in all it was a good day but a shame that the carp didn't show, I had loads of roach upto 1lb and Ty had loads of little roach and rudd.

The picture below is of me with the 6lb carp from Warmwell.

Re: Two Days Fishing In Dorset

I forgot to mention that the lake is called Kingfisher lake because there are Kingfishers there. We watched one going up and down the lake all session and it perched in a tree just to my left for a couple of minutes. An experience that I will remember for a long time.
