st bennets abbey (a ghostly place )

again i went out with a mate to track downhopefully a few breamand maybe abonus big roach or hybred .
again we wanted to fish a place were neither of us had fished but we had knowledge that the area had a pedigree in producing quality fish so we decided after our last success on the thurne and not wanting to go to the river ant for the moment because both of us have over the years caught very well .
a decision was made and the bure would be are target for tonight but where and we decided to go to st bennets abbey which is very well known for producing good bags in matches and also famous in books for the ghosts of monks (15th/16th century hoddies or when the abbey was still in use ) that have been seen there so it was decided thats where we would go and fish there in the hope wewould catch some fish and maybe see a ghost
here are a couple of whats left of the old abbey (yes i too looked carefully at the pictures to see if a monk was caught on camera .

soon we had arrived and fishing with the abbey directly behind us and being a bright and nearly if not a full moon gave the session that extra bit of eerie
touch with the moon casting shadows through the gaps in the ruins (you get the picture )
tactics were feeder of about an ounce with corn being used as hook bait on a size 8 onabout a two/three foot hook link but after a while was cut down to about a foot after several really good bites were missed right at the start .
the pace of the river was also surprisingly strong and this consideration was taken into when groundbaiting up at the start i baited up with about 12 cricket ball size balls and threw these just off the inside ledge i had found and were also thrown 15 foot to the left on my fishing spot to counter act the flow and where i thought it should land .
it took about half an hour for fish to move and show interest in my area and frustratingly some absolutely unmisserble bites were missed
then i had my fisrst conection of the night and it felt solid in the flow and i thought i had snagged but the nodding told me differently i actually had to carefully play the bream in and it was a cracking fish to for this part of the river and i estimated it to be about 6lb 8oz

what a nice start i thought the session was rewarding and frustrating with more bites being missed and not being able to actually put good reason why this was happening i tried changing hoolength legth and the how much bait wason the hook hoping it was not masking the point changing weight of feeder aswell whether this was making a different so in the end i put it down to one of them things i hit the odd fish and then would miss twice as many then i had another good quality fish on and at first in the moonlight i though i had a very big roach on indeed and when it slid over the net chord i still believed i hada very very big roach and i was excited even when i first turned the head light on i though YES! but it turned out to be a hybred but a very nice one at that .

certainly my biggest to date so i was well pleased a couple more followed and too did a couple more respectable size bream

we fished till 1pm and then the tide turned and the bites dried up and we gave it another half an hour and decided this had been good night.
my mate also had a couple of quality bream and a few nice hybreds too .
we sadly did not see the ghosts that are famous at the abbey but did look as we walked through the ruins to get back to the car.
but i will go back and fish it again on my own in hope that they might be shy and you have to be on your own

tightlines
kevin
