Talking gudgeon, minnow and a BIG suprise

well headed off to the river culm at killerton this morning
arrived about 6.30
armed with 2 pints of maggot, float rod, net, few hooks, floats and camera

started on the left hand bank into the big field
nice pool just before river speeds up

tactics were 4lb line 4 bb chubber float and 2lb hooklink to size 18 barbless

after a few casts and few nice roach,(I was also missing loads of bites as its a barbless water )then result!!!!!!!!!!!!! first points with a minnow

then after few more a small chub(which didnt want to be photo'd and leapt back into swim...no worries will get another later i thought???!!!) then hoorah the elusive and hard fighting gudgeon, so after using all the recent forum advice on thes fish a shortish fight ensued with a hard set clutch but no but pad as I'm Hard!! I bring in this beauty

So really chuffed as thats 3 points now and still sure i can get another chub!!!

It was now that one of the pregnant cows in the field decided that I shouldnt be in there and bullied me away and back to the carpark,
So I left this bank and headed to the other (cow free)side of river, on route realised had broken net(not that had used anyway) so decided to go without, and stepped line up to 4lb straight through as bank can be higher on this side and there are some big chub in this river

set up next into this swim,

kept with a size 18 hook and single maggot at this point, plan to step up later after got points for the larger fish

well what happened next was awsome and not sure I shall ever forget

the float dipped once

struck and missed

the float dipped again

struck and missed but saw a big boil in the water

float dipped again

struck and either a minnow or gudgeon is on

then
BANG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Float shot away!!! and an very fiesty pike is on my line with a size 18!!!!! hook in its mouth

I was so supprised that i grabbed my camers and took this quick pic as sure would come off in seconds

but no he stayed on and after quite a long fight where i was certain all the time that either the line or hook would give any second it was amazingly tamed and came to the bank

Now as i have no net now, and as have not been shown how to chin a pike out by anyone, and didnt want to hurt this awsome fish by attempting it.

I was really glad to see it bit the line at this point then just lay in the shallows knackered, I estimate it was about 7lb difficult to say but definately my biggest pike

did rock it a few times to help it recover which it eventually did well and shot off
well as the swim was ruined i moved on and tried a few more spots for the chub but too be honest heart wasnt in it then as had just had such a buzz

left about 11.30 well happy

(untill took 1 1/2 hours to get the 1/2 hour home past all the caravans )

definately a red letter day

Dave

Thumbs up Re: gudgeon, minnow and a BIG suprise

Cracking report Dave & well done on the pike. I just love small rivers & streams, as you never know what they can produce. I've had chub up to 6lb out of streams that you could step accross & that most people would never dream of fishing. Definatey beats commercial carp puddles.
