the thurne

well as you know i went last night for another sessionafter bream and we had a look around at another spot that my and my mate had never fished we had looked at a couple but both felt that thurne from what we had heard from other angler the river thurne was fishing well so another couple of mile drive to the thurne was done .now the spot we were going to look at wasone of the spots that get used in the broads open so it should produce usafish or two we hoped .
we decided as it was a bit of a hike we would take our gear just in case we decided it look right to fish ,
so after the trek of about a mile and a 1/4 we arrived at the spot which was right on the entrance of the thurne were it runs into the river bure another good norfolk river .theoretically where we sat was on the bure but the place was called the thurne mouth .

it was nice to also watch and here the oyster catchers to my left over the far bank flying around the far bank reed beds in the late evening light .
what we liked here was that as the swim was on the outer edge of the sharp bend and the thurne running in to our right that it created and slack water area with back eddies
which we hoped would be a fish holding area .we got set up and went about making up the ground baits

this consisted of white and brown bread crumb mixed half pint of casters and a tin of sweet corn and blood worm pellet and another small 3 mm pellet
tactics were a very simple feeder rig with a 18" hook length with a size 8 hook and baits we had at our disposal were corn, bread ,casters i went for three grains of corn to start with ,and fished in the slack water about 3 metres out .
i was surprised how deep it was and i counted downand estimated about 7 to 8 feet .
the rod now settle in its position as the last of the evening light faded away

sorry i just have to take a boring rod tip shot
my mate was the first to score with a small roach i was getting a few nibbles and i suspected these were fish on the baited area and were just hitting the lines i struck at a couple and eventaully i fouled hooked a small bream this made me to decided to fish a bit shorter .
soon after this a missed a cracking bream bite with a big drop back i felt this was due using three peices of corn i decided to drop this to two peices and tip it off with a caster
this seem to be the combination that work as on my next cast a lovely bream was hooked

soon i had another couple of smaller bream on the next to consecutive cast and then i miss bite which becomes annoying when you can,t see any reason for it ..
this is how the next couple of hours went for me with a couple more bream and acouple of hybreds .
my mate had struggle but he was sticking with bread but he had a couple of roach and also a nice hybred but no bream.
we decided as it was a bit of a walk back we would leave the fish .
here are a couple more pics of some of the fish i caught on the session my mate took while i was releasing them .

again a i felt the short session went well for me although my mate ( the bream king ) as i call him had no bream. we both now will book mark this area for further sessions when we get time but we decided to investigate another new area on sunday in our search for some bigger slabs .

Re: the thurne

well to get the best out of bream i reckon you definately got to fish rivers and fish alot lighter to get the best out of them i like slow to medium paced waters but some rivers on the broads system can be sluggish and to slow to get a real fight ,
i had some fantastic battles in fast flowing rivers like the wensum especially the lenwade mill weir pool that was great until they made it private
