Spytty Pond 24/07/06

In need of some more points for the species hunt I decided to go after a perch or 2. I had a choice of the canal or Spytty Pond where I had caught perch, albeit small, previously. I opted for Spytty as it gave me a chance of a decent carp on my second rod.

I set up one rod with corn and a feeder and lobbed it out and set the other up with a float and worm on size 12 hook which I put out near the thick reed beds. On a previous trip I'd had lots of small (4oz) perch on maggots in the same area and so I was feeding lose maggots to attract the fish. Soon the swim was teaming with small roach but thanfully they were leaving the worm for my intended quarry. Nothing showed for quite a while and then the float dipped but I missed it and wound in to find the worm gone. I thought this was unusual as perch are usually obliging and jump on the hook for me. This happened several more times and also the hot weather had taken its toll on my worms despite my best efforts to keep them shaded so I had to settle for using maggot. I thought that at least I'd be picking up some roach if nothing else but for some reason the bait was being ignored while fish fought over my lose feed. Eventually I had a decent bait but when I struck I was greeted with my float and hook flying back at me. I finally got another bite and I wasn't missing this one! I struck and the poor 3oz roach was flying through the air but at least my duck was broken. I had another bite and connected with something that fought back and I pulled in this small eel of about 6oz

I hate the slimy things but it was 1.5 points all the same and at least I caught my bait robber as he coughed up one of my worms!

After removing my slime coverered hook length I cast back out but still wasn't getting the fish, I eventually decide this was due to the wind dragging the float and making the bait look unnatural so decided to freeline some maggots in the margins and on my first drop had a roach of about 4 or 5 ozs. A family passed and stopped to watch me as I promptly took another on the next drop and another and another and to my amusement heard one of the kids telling his dad I must be a professional or something. They eventually moved off and my luck went with them. Total for the few hours was 1 eel and about 8 small roach.

Re: Spytty Pond 24/07/06

Should have added nothing caught on second rod. I had a huge "bite", hooked into it and it pulled really hard. It was only when I looked up and saw the kid the other side of the lake also fighting a big "fish" that I realised the idiot had cast about 80% of the way across the pond and over my line! Why do people do that? It's a very small pond, if you want to fish the other side just walk around and drop it in the margins. What annoyed me even more was that he was in the peg that I had hoped to fish and it fishes really well close in!!! Rant over lol.
