fenland jungle exploits

well yesterday i made a decision to go up to the fens as i,de been thinking of going for a summer zander session ,it was like an itch i had to scratch after a chat with fishy paul about zander the seed had been planted and it was not going to go away until i went so i bit the bullet and went .
i plan was to first try and stalk a carp then go catch some bait and then go off to try for a zed when it got dark .
well it did not go to plan and the carp stalking went out the window as i decided to go catch some bait for zedding later so late afternoon found me standing by the sluice trying to catch some bait .

it was nice to back catching for fun instead of carping although i enjoy it.
i find nothing better than to be on the fens trying to catch the mysterious zander from the miles of the fen drains .
i was enjoying catching rudd, roach ,bleak ,(yes i know i need a bleak for the species hunt but i did not take a picture )
time was getting on a i needed to get set up for the zeds as it was now starting to get dark and the small fish hads also gone of the feed so i moved to my selected swim and quickly set up in the jungle of over grown grass and other bank side plants

.tactics were simple i would fish lives on all three rods and the methods were a simple running lead system on a fox bouyant ledger stem and the other two were fished on ledger paternoster rigs soon the rods were despatched to likely places .
i sat back popped the kettle on and had a refreshing coffee while i sat there watching and waiting .
thoughts turned to if i get one i need to be ready as they will fight hard and are more fragile during the summer so all care need to be taken so every thing was set up so fish could be unhooked and photoed very quickly .
soon i had a short aborted take on my close in rod on inspection it looked like an eel bite soon the
bait was placed back out about another 20 minutes another sort sharp bite this time i managed to strike but nothing again it was an eel by the crushed head of the bait as normally if its a zed bite you will see the destinctive puncture marks from its teeth .
this went on for about an hour an a half and all eel bite were missed i decided to call it a night at about 2. 30am and packed up and headed home .

tightlines
kevin
