Talking Bradford on Avon 21/06/06

Went back to the Town Water in Bradford on Avon Today to try for Bleak & minnows again for the Species hunt. Found a nice secluded swim in some bushes, where nobody could see what I was fishing for .

Downstream View

Upstream View

Set up a waggler float & size 22 hook baited with maggot. Catapulted out some maggots as loosefeed, cast out & the float went straight under. Target species 1 A Bleak...

Then I saw a few Minnows swimming in the margins, so I baited with a single pinkie & freelined it in front of the shoal. 5 seconds later, target species 2 a Minnow....

Good start!!! now with the hard work over it was time for some proper fishing.
Set up a feeder rod with 6lb line, 5lb flourocarbon hooklength & size 12 hook with hair rigged luncheon meat for bait.
Cast to the far bank beneath an overhanging tree. Tip went straight round & I had a nice little chub of about a 1lb.
Next cast same thing happened. This time something pulled back very hard. After about five minutes I pulled this over my landing net.....

A 4lb 2oz Chub.

Best one so far this season. During the next 2 hours I had a few more small chub, but nothing special. Then it started to rain. It was almost my dinner time, so I decided to have one more cast. Tip pulled round again & I was into another big fish. This one took even longer to land & turned out to be another Chub weighing dead on 4lbs.

All in all a successful day & not bad for a free water.

Just to make the day perfect, I had a kingfisher diving from a bush next to my swim & showing me how the experts catch Minnows.
