02/04/06 Bury Hill: Rob & Paul's Day Out

Well, after my hazardous, seat-of-your-pants 1.5 mile drive to Bury Hill (that one-way system is a bitch ) I met Paul at the tackle shop at the lake at 7.35am. After wishing each other Happy New Year and Easter (it's been a while) we decided to fish together on peg 32, facing the island on The Old Lake:

Paul was set up in no time, while I (in true fashion) had not prepared anything in advance and was making up rigs on the spot
Once all the rods were cast out, we put the brolley up as the wind was really picking up. Sadly it lasted all day, which we felt affected the fishing. Bacon sarnies were next on the agenda, so I sparked up the stove and we enjoyed a couple before Paul's left hand rod screamed off and after a bit of a scrap, he landed a lovely tench of 5lb 3oz:

The bait was a Marine Halibut pellet. Paul experienced another good run, which sadly didn't develop. We then had a really quiet period, which we used the time by me playing around with my spod and Paul doing a bit of quiver-tipping, which gave him a couple of bites, but sadly no fish landed. At least we had time to catch up and have a laugh!

Just after lunchtime, it was my turn for a run and it gave me a tench of 4lbs 8ozs (I think), Paul has picture of this fish, it was taken on a Richworth tutti-frutti boilie. The afternoon was very quiet, and with both of us almost giving up, Paul was packing away when one of his rods screamed off. This time we knew this was what we were after and it was fighting and taking line like crazy. It crossed both my lines in a bid to escape, but Paul skillfully brought it to the net:

A mirror carp of 15lb 3oz! Taken on a tutti-frutti boilie.

This is when things went mental: Paul was returning his fish to the lake when the baitrunner on my rod screamed off (I had placed it on the ground to avoid tangling with Paul's fish) and I hooked into another good fish. It didn't feel like much to start with, but as it got close to the net, it went ballistic and headed into the next peg to hide in the lillies. Me and Paul had to chase it, but eventually after a bit of a fight, I'd landed another mirror carp, 14lb 8oz!:

Caught on a snowman rig, Scopex 16mm boilie/14 mm Pineapple pop-up. As Paul was just about to leave, I had a another strong run on one of my rods, and it snapped off! Grrr!

Anyway, it was a brilliant end to a brilliant day. We laughed a lot, took the p*** a lot and even caught a couple of decent fish each. Nice one!

Cheers
Rob

Thumbs up Re: 02/04/06 Bury Hill: Rob & Paul's Day Out

Nice report & pics guys, pity about the weather though, but at least you had some good fish & good company. It's a long time since I fished Bury Hill. Think I might have to pay it another visit sometime soon.

Re: 02/04/06 Bury Hill: Rob & Paul's Day Out

what a great day,
a couple of tench early on and that seemed like that,
when the wind dropped in the last hour i had a final cast and nailed it,got it close to the distant island that the wind was preventing us from doing all day.
i had actually packed up one rod and was standing over the other one ready to reel in when it shot off,
it went off like a bat out of hell and took a cart load of line before rob skilfully landed it.
i was actually on my belly putting this fish back when robs fish took off,as you can imagine, total mayhem developed and we finally netted robs fish in the next swim down.
a wonderful end to a very nice sociable day.
thanks rob,

next time greenheart why don't you come along, you too can witness what a jammy sod rob is !!
