Smile Clivey Pond 27-04-06

I had intended fishing Crockerton lake to try for a Tench for the species hunt. But I heard that Clivey Pond Nr Dilton Marsh was producing a few. So as it's only one & a half minutes drive from my house (Literally... maybe less if I break the 30mph speed limit) & as i'd never fished there before I thought I would give it a go. Clivey pond is run by Chris Haines, who used to have a tackle shop in Frome. He now has a really well stocked tackle shop on the fishery site. Got to the lake at about 9.30 am (Another early start) Paid £4 for my day ticket & bought half a pint of mixed maggots & half a pint of mixed pinkies. (Keeping it simple) I also had a tin of sweetcorn Speaking to Chris, I was also pleased to learn that there were also a lot of Gudgeon in the pond & that they were usually a bloody nuisance, as I also need one of these for the species comp. Found a nice sheltered spot in a quiet corner of the pool & set up my pole.

Once again I almost had the complete fishery to myself, with just one other angler on the far side.
As I was setting up I noticed that the reeds to my left were moving as some big fish swam through them. So I plumbed the depth beside the reeds (4ft) Groundbaited with some Van Den Eynde Supercup & lowered my bait as close to the reeds as I could get.

The float sailed straight under & I was into a nice little rudd.

Next cast I had my main target species, a small tench.

A few small, roach, rudd & perch followed & then I had a pretty little Crucian.

The fish came at a steady pace for the rest of the day to maggot & sweetcorn. I ended the day with 7 species, Roach, Tench, Rudd, Crucian Carp, Silver Bream, Perch & A few common carp on sweetcorn that smashed up a couple of my pole rigs, although I did manage to land a few. These were all returned immediately as Carp are not allowed to be retained in keepnets here.

But try as I might, I could'nt manage to catch a Gudgeon.
All in all a fun day, the weather was fantastic & I ended up with a a good mixed bag.
