Smile Rood Ashton 21-04-06 Report

Got to the lake early 8.30am (Well thats early for me anyway) Just as it started to rain.

. I had the whole lake to myself except for the ducks & that's the way it remained all day.

Set up the brolly & a feeder rod loaded with 6lb line, 5lb hooklength & a size 10 hair rigged hook. Mixed up some Van Den Eynde Strawberry groundbait, brown crumb, hemp & sweetcorn for the feeder. Baited up with a single grain of sweetcorn. I kept getting very shy bites, but nothing I could connect with. So I tried a peice of luncheon meat. Still nothing. Then I tried a peice of bread flake & had an instant take. A nice little carp of about 3lb.

Baited up with flake again & had a couple of similar fish. Then I noticed a few much bigger fish taking bread that had floated to the surface. So I set up my Shimano Barbel rod with 8lb line straight through to a size 6 barbless hook & baited it with a large piece of crust. I prefer to freeline crust as I believe it gives much better presentation than using a controller or bubble float. I had an immediate & confident take from a much better fish. After a good fight I landed another common of about 7lb

The sun came out & the fish were now rising freely. I continued to fish crust for the rest of the day catching fish almost every cast between 5lb To
9 1/2lb. the only problems I had was that I kept bumping fish off due to barbless hooks & The bloody ducks kept racing the fish for the bread.

ETC ETC ETC
Lost count of the amout of fish I caught, but all were beautifully scaled Commons in excellent condition. All in all an excellent day + I achieved my target fish for the species hunt. Think i'll try for Tench next.......
