a chilly one

had a nice but rather cold days piking today
the weather was overcast, cold but still,
i settled in to a normally productive swim in a large inlet, not a lot was happening,i picked up a jack of about 3lb on a copper spoon but otherwise very quiet,
i started noticing a lot of activity in a corner of the inlet and moved there quickly when i found it was pike that were causing it.there were large shoals of fry in this corner and the pike were going berserk.
unfortunately they were so pre-occupied with the fry they weren't interested in any of my baits or spinners.
i had a very frustrating afternoon watching pike rolling in my swim but not taking any baits.
As the light was fading i got 2 fish in 15 minutes,a nice fish of 7lb or so took a float-fished sardine in the margins and another of about 9lb took a free-lined smelt.
a good day with 3 points for the species hunt (i caught a roach on the whip early on ).

Nice report & pics Paul. Think I feel inspired to have a crack at the old Esox now. Might try a bit of plugging.

Nice one Paul.....Pike can be so frustrating can't they. A Bit like Rainbow Trout when they are on the Fry as well. Glad you caught a couple in the end
