Fished another Newport AA water on Saturday. Spytty Pond is a small water on the edges of an industrial estate and not the most picturesque place to fish as there is a lot of rubbish with a nearby gypsy camp and some construction works nearby adding to the general rubbish. However, there are some lovely bull rushes and lily pads on the pond itself, access is easy and several people claim it currently the best NAA water with carp into low double figures coming out quite regularly. I set up about 3.00pm using 2 rods. On my carp rod I had a method feeder with strawberry groundbait and a strawberry boilie on a hair rig. My float rod was set up with a 4bb waggler float, size 14 barbless hook with a bunch of mixed maggots and this is how I fished other than a short spell with a few small lobworms I'd managed to get out of my bone dry garden. The signs were promising with small fish breaking surface all over the place and sure enough within minutes my float was registering cautious bites. After a short time I had a decent bite which started taking my float to the reeds but I missed it. I continued getting small bites but they weren't taking the hook so I removed one shot to see if that made the fish more confident and immediately got success with a tiny perch about 4 inches long ![]() The bites kept coming resulting in another 2 identical perch, an eel about 6 inches long which dropped off as I lifted it out of the water and a slightly larger perch which again dropped off. My final fish of the day was this one ![]() which I think is a roach (sure someone will correct me). Only got 3 hours fishing in but it was good fun with constant bites on the float set-up although unfortunately nothing on the carp rod but more importantly another 3 points for the species hunt. Next time I'll be getting the bigger fish there. Unfortunately there is no spinning allowed or I'd be chasing the larger perch with that method. Sorry, about the picture quality, only had the mobile phone with me.

Re: Spytty Pond 10/09/05 Sounds good fun Mark, well done. Big lobworm on the hook and chopped worm used as loosefeed for the perch ![]() __________________ Dan `·.¸¸.·´¯`·.¸ Big or small, look after them all! ¸.·´¯`·.¸ ><((((º>

Re: Spytty Pond 10/09/05 Yep, I was hoping for perch before I went so dug a few worms but the dry conditions meant I only got two decent sized ones (about 4 inches) and the eel I lost took one with him . I'm thinking of building a wormery. I used to fish a small canal and had 13 perch one day about 20 years ago, they were all 1 to 2 lbs which I thought was normal but now when I see perch caught on TV programmes they call similar sized fish large!

Re: Spytty Pond 10/09/05 Not sure if live baiting is allowed, I'll check the rules. There's also the small problem that I'd have to catch the bait in the first place!!! ![]()
