Converted To The Darkside

Well, having got fed up of blank sessions at the sea, having to wait for tides that suit my spare time and in a deparate bid for points for the species hunt I joined Newport AA on Saturday and spent a lovely Saturday evening at Woodstock Pool in Newport. Arrived at about 8.30pm and there were fish breaking surface all around including a double figure common carp which jumped clear of the water about 30 yards away (never realised carp could leap like that!). I fished with maggot on the float over ranges of about 5 to 20m and got loads of bites which I missed and 2 hook ups which I lost before finally landing a bream of about 1lb, my first coarse fish in 20 years and 1 more point for the species hunt (took a pic but the flash didn't work so just a black photo). Packed up and left at about 1.30am having thoroughly enjoyed myself and learnt a few things:-

1. Must put lighter line on my reel as it still has the 12lb mono I use for light sea float fishing and seemed to spook the fish.

2. 2bb floats don't cast very far!

3. Freshwater hooks are bloody tiny and my hands are very clumsy.

4. There may well be thousands of stocked fish in these ponds but they are fussy buggers.

5. Need to strike at bites more quickly and in the opposite direction to the fish is swimming.

6. When casting in pitch black with a swim feeder and the opposite bank is about 30 - 40 yards away, don't put much effort into the cast!!!

As a paid up member of the Newport AA I now have 5 small lakes available to fish at any time as well as a stretch of canal and 2 or 3 stretches of the River so watch out Smoothy and Welly, me and Pete are going to start our surge for the Species hunt now!!!

Re: Converted To The Darkside

Nice report mate! I've recently gone to the darkside and love it. It means I can fish when I like without having to drive at least 30 miles to the coast

Re: Converted To The Darkside

Found it quite cheap so far, tin of sweet corn, some bread, even the maggots were cheaper than rag!

The little *&^%$& didn't get a chance to fight, I wasn't risking losing another one!
