Float fishing

Ok then, I take on my first freshwater fishing session tomorrow with my brother-in-law. I've bought gear today, a 13' waggler rod, Shimano reel, floats, shot, net, line etc. Any tips for catching certain species?

Rob

Re: Float fishing

What's in the lake mate?

For carp, tench, bream etc.. I'd firstly plumb the depth Freshwater Fishing - knowing your depth

Then fish just on bottom, or an inch above.

Fish using little bits of meat, maggots, worm and you should catch a great variety of species.

I'd fish it to features, islands, overhanging trees, weedbeds, lilypads(my favourites) and while doing that chuck in a bit of loosefeed (corn, maggots, chopped worm etc..) and also bait up a margin swim, as you get a lot of fish in close..

Good luck mate, don't get too many species points

Re: Float fishing

Cheers Smoothy . We'll be fishing Old Bury Hill lake (75 pegs). It contains carp, tench, bream, roach, rudd, perch, crucian carp, chub, pike and zander. Thanks for the advice Dan, I'm looking forward to it, it's like a whole new world to me!

When you say chuck in, is that literally? I don't have a catapult or owt like that. I know I'm supposed to feed the swim. The baits you recommended were the ones I was going to use, good guess (on my part)!

Cheers

Re: Float fishing

They seem to be the standard baits these days

Depends on whether you're fishing close in or not, if you are then yes, do it, and you can chuck in loosefeed when feeding the margin swim too.

If you can't reach with the loosefeed, then you could always use a swimfeeder instead of float fishing?

But when I'm carp fishing, I very rarely have any loosefeed by my hookbait, just that on it's own.

Yikes, getting complicated now! Seriously, fishing the margins was my aim, so it looks like I should catch a few (fingers crossed)
