| A lazy couple of hours after small Crucians It’s been a while since I fished for Crucians and after hearing that another one of our club members had very recently broken the official Crucian Carp record by just 7 drms (4lb 10oz) from one of our clubs other waters it whet my appetite; and because I had a few maggots left over in the bait fridge I decided to spend a couple of hours to see if I could catch a couple of small Crucians at one of our clubs smaller lakes which is just down the road from where I live. The lake I was fishing was originally dug out by the club back in the 1930’s from old watercress beds and is owned right out by the club, it is an ideal match lake with a mass of arms reaching out into the lake making it quite interesting with lots of willows and other trees overhanging along its banks. A few hundred yards away is the ruins of Sopwell Priory where the first known English book containing chapters on fishing called 'the Boke of Saint Albans’ was attributed to the Prioress ‘Dame Julliana Berners’ back in 1486; and the small stream that runs past the priory enters and exits the clubs lake. It was a very warm day with the sun beating down and as I hate sitting out in the sun directly I decided to fish next to a bed of lillies on the shady side of the lake. It wasn’t very long before the float started nudging along and sinking similar to a typical Crucian bite but when I lifted into it; it turned out to be one of the Signal Crayfish that have been plaguing the lake over the last couple of seasons. After stamping on the Signal Cray I lay a small bed of pellets well away from the lillies in a vain attempt to attract any other Crays away from the lillies then fired out a few maggots with a tiny sprinkling of corn and cast my float back out. This seemed to work as I was soon into my first Crucian of around half a pound, I continued to catch small Crucians intersperced with the odd small Roach and Perch, nothing of any size with the largest Crucian being around a pound in weight but It was a very pleasant way to spend a couple of hours. It was so peaceful I could almost imagine Dame Julliana fishing in the peace and quiet next to me.
