| Saturday at Corn Hill What a glorious afternoon to go fishing. The beers were on ice in the boot as I met my regular bankside companion, Mark at the tackle shop at twelve. I had ducked out of work half an hour early and was raring to go, after all, this would possibly be the last sunny afternoon of the summer, before autumn, then winter take there grip on the northern stillwaters. Armed with simple baits, meat, catmeat and corn - we stocked up on groundbait and hemp and were on our way. Only a 20 minute drive to the venue and on arrival there was nobody there so we got the swim of choice. A great days fishing with the best carp a touch over 11lb and a beautiful looking common with flecks of orange over its body, further carp of 8 to 10lb were landed throughout the day and then - by complete suprise - A Barbel!! We didn't even know they were in the water and speaking with Harry, the owner, he reckons they don't get caught much and to his knowledge, the first all year. Mark was jumping about with joy as it's his first Barbel and also, he wins our little wager of a bottle of wine to the first to catch one this season. Stillwater Barbel I know, but - a Barbel none the less. A brilliant day to end the summer fishing calender. Mark has pics of some of the catch so hopefully I will update when he sends them. |
