Upper Kennet Big Stripeys & Rubber Lips

First report for a while, got a new job and it has been difficult to get to the bankside, but I think today more than made up for my lack fishing over the last few months.

Venue: Upper Kennet, West Berkshire.

Bait: Mashed Bread & Red Maggots.

Tactic: Trotting with a Waggler!!

Fished a peg that used to be a Weir, but this was removed about 5 years ago due to a lack of water, what is left is a mid paced stretch with a deep hole, perfect for Perch & Chub.

First cast produces a fine Brown Trout (Species Hunt Fish) of about a 1lb 6ozs.

Next cast produces a lively Rainbow Trout (Species Hunt Fish) of about the same size as the Brownie.

As expected after the Trout, things went a little quiet, but still kept the feed going in, it wasn't too long before another target species was making its way to the net in the form of a nice 1lb 12ozs Chub.

Now things were starting to heat up, a couple of missed bites, then the float bangs under and I hit something solid, it stayed on the bottom, my first thought was it could well be a Bream as there is a large shoal of them that swim up and down the stretch, some knocking the 9lb mark, but no, it was one of the gorgeous big Perch, banging the scales down to 2lb 14ozs, a very fat fish and not a mark on it.

With the light now starting to fade, the Chub make another couple of appearances, one at 2lb 2ozs and this one at 2lb 7ozs.

Next was another Perch, but only a small one, but beautifully marked all the same, then another Target species, a Minnow (sorry about the quality of the photo!!)

A late barrage of 3 Trout was halted by another nice Perch, which I did not weigh, but felt about 1lb and a 1/2, again beautifully marked as you can see.

A great way to start my River season, roll on the first few frosts.

Re: Upper Kennet Big Stripeys & Rubber Lips

Well done CC, nice looking fish you got there.

I have just started out fishing freshwater in my local river (Medway) and have been trying out floats with red maggots, had 2 perch on my first outing on the river but would love to catch something different, gonna give it another try tomorrow!!!! My perch were only tiny but gave a real acount of themselves!!! Threy are like the Bass of the freshwater!! I can only imagine the fun the bigger ones must give you

Tight Lines

Re: Upper Kennet Big Stripeys & Rubber Lips

Well done, great report and pics. Some nice fish too. I bought a screw in adapter for my camera, which lets you attach the camera to a bank stick, and I find it very handy for taking pics of me with my fish if I am on my own.
Only cost a couple of quid too.
