| Short notice trip - and a PB ! It was a sunny Sunday afternoon. The missus and daughter were away visiting friends - I looked at son, he looked at me....well...shall we?........... so I did a quick check list - 2 rods, 2 reels - check. 1 bag chum mixer - check 1 landing net and unhooking mat - check. Scales and camera - check. Forceps, spare hooks, and spare line - check. Polarized sunglasses - check. 2 cans of coke (1 of which is Diet) - check. No more to be said - off we went to a local lake for a couple of hours. I decided to go to a small secluded lake about 20 minutes drive away. I had only fished it twice before in early 2010 and had caught carp up to 13lb when using method feeder. Aaron had not fished it before, and asked what size carp were in there, and I said I thought they went up to 15lb. I wasnt even sure if it would be any good for floater fishing, and on a sunny afternoon like today it would probably be busy too. There were a few cars in the carpark on arrival, - quite a few anglers enjoying the late sunny afternoon - and we paid our £5 each in the honesty box and went off down the grassy lane to the lake. We went round to the far corner of the lake, where a couple of swims were vacant, set up the gear and started chucking in some chum mixer. There were about 8 or 9 other anglers dotted around the lake, half of which were using floating pellets and controller floats to try and tempt the carp from further out towards the island. Aaron and I have not used controller floats yet, relying on freelined chum mixer to do the job, as we tend to get most of our fish in the margins. Most of the other anglers were casting out to the island in the middle of the lake, but it was too far for us to cast using just freelined dog biscuit, so we baited up some margin areas, and chucked a few out about halfway to the island. After about 45 minutes, Aaron was the first to hook a fish, right by an area of lily pads in the margin, and although only 6 or 7lbs, it put up a good scrap. The next fish was Aarons as well, - slightly bigger this time and a lovely common carp knocking on 10lbs. Meanwhile, I wasnt having much luck. There were no fish showing in the margins in my swim, so I was fishing further out, halfway to the island, but kept missing the takes (I suppose that is why I should try using a controller float as it helps hook the fish!!!). Aaron moved down a swim, still in the margins, and even though he was 20 yards away I could hear a carp slurping in the margin of his swim, and I thought its only a matter of time..and sure enough he hooked another. He shouted that this one was a bigger one, and it certainly looked like it. Eventually it was in the net, and it was a good un too. Tipped the scales exactly on 18lb - his personal best (previous was 12lb 8oz). Aaron was chuffed to bits - and was the envy of the other anglers at the lake who had been struggling to get any from the island area. I moved swim, and got one from under my feet near some lily pads - at last! A fish of about 8lb. Aaron had one more, as did I. 4 to Aaron - 2 to me. We then decided to pack up for the day, and get some KFC on the way home..mmmm, followed by a cool beer - you cant beat it! The margins area we fished [IMG] [/IMG]The island to the left, where most of the other anglers were trying for fish [IMG] [/IMG]Aaron and his PB of 18lb [IMG] [/IMG]I thought I was gonna blank - Aaron had got 3 including his 18lb'er before I got this common [IMG] [/IMG]Time for home - food and beer calling...
