Sunny afternoon on the lake

Once again took my son Aaron, and his friend Connor out carp fishing for the afternoon. Forecast said misty/cloudy possible drizzle when I looked at it 2 days ago, didnt think to check it again yesterday as it turned out to be - Blazing sunshine and very humid all afternoon - hot but nice.
This was Connors 2nd carp trip, and after having caught about 10 carp at a commercial fishery a couple of weeks ago on his first carp trip, we thought we would try a different venue today. This lake has carp up to about 17lb in it, but we advised Connor not to expect the same amount of fish this time, as they are a tad harder to catch.
As usual, we decided on the old favourite, Chum Mixer, however I had bought some imitation chum mixer from the local tackle shop, and thought I would give them a go, as it saves having to hair rig new mixers regularly, and we could leave our imitation mixers floating in the water indefinately without them becoming soggy, soft, and sinking!
Nobody else was at the venue on our arrival which meant we could wander around trying various swims. It was very hard work though, as it was very difficult to get any carp to come up to the surface, even on the usual/regular swims that we know usually produce a carp (well sometimes). There was not much activitiy at all on the lake, which is unusual, as there are usually carp slurping around the islands etc, and fish topping here and there, but not today.
I eventually hooked one after an hour, about 8lbs or so. Then as I was walking down past Aaron, camera in hand to take some pics, he hooked one right under his feet, and as I like messing around with the camera I decided to record the action. There are some low hanging branches at the swim he was at, plus quite a few under water snags, so he didnt have much room to maneouvre and kept a tight reign on the carp.
It fought well - although we tend to use light (ish) rods, and a nice looking carp ended up in the net.
I caught another about 8lbs again later on, but it took me an hour of constantly baiting an area to get it to take my imitation floater.

I found that while the imitation dog biscuit, looked like the other free offerings, the carp that did show an interest were quick to spit it back out, or turn away at the last minute (although they sometimes do that with hair rigged real mixer). I wasnt sure if that was to do with the mood they were in, as they were very finnicky and hard to catch, or because the mixer didnt feel like the other real ones, but I will try the imitation ones again for sure, as we did catch on them.

Connor, poor lad, hadnt caught anything by late afternoon, but give him credit - he persevered and kept trying, and eventually ended up with a nice carp of 10lb, 15 mins before we were due to pack up

Aaron and Connor with their carp, the only fish for them on the day, but perseverance rewarded

Thumbs up Re: Sunny afternoon on the lake

The three of you are fast becoming the Holy Trinity of carp fishing lol. Nice read Baz, well done to the boys on their fish. I had a cracking day myself on Sunday, forecast said cloudy all day, there was I, in the middle of the river in blazing hot sunshine all daylol. Anyway well done again.
