A Fresh Challenge (13/7/11)

I have been looking for a while at a new challenge and i knew what it would be! To catch my first mullet, i had tried and failed in the past but i had never really put much effort into it.

Today i went to a saline dam where i knew there was always a few mullet about, the small freshwater stream that ran in mixed with the saltwater that arrived in at high tide seems to be the perfect combination for mullet!

I made up some mashed bread and fish oils to try and get them feeding which trust me is easier said than done! In went the mashed concoction and not a mullet even looked at it, they swam through it, over it, under it, trust me they did everything but eat it!

Anyway i set up a clear insert waggler with 4lb fluro hook link fishing about 2ft deep using bread flake on a size 14 long shanked hook. An hour later not a thing, it was getting frustrating with the fish moving all around my bait with out taking!

I was just about to give up when i thought to myself that this was part of the challenge and this payed off as within 15 mins of the decision a fish darted out of a shoal and engulfed my bread! it started running line off the real and put up a hell of a scrap, I can see why they are likened to bone fish!

It hit the net at what i would guess to be slightly over 2lbs so im well chuffed for my first thick lip. I'm awful at guessing weights so If you think i am well out you can let me know what you think it is.

That was the last of the mullet today as i seemed to spoke all the mullet about trying to land the last one!

Out of the corner of my eye i noticed that a small eel kept poking its head out from below a few broken bricks that were in at the side of the dam, i needed a freshwater eel for the hunt so i put on a small lob worm and slowly lowered it over the entrance to were the eel disappeared and straight away out pops the eels and snatches the worm and for all the size of it, it really did hold on!

So thats a new species and 3 points at the end of the day!

Cheers

JC

Re: A Fresh Challenge (13/7/11)

Congrats on your first Mullet.

Its one of the fish that I dont think I have ever caught either, even though I used to be in the RN and used to see them all the time in docks around the globe.

It looks a tad larger than 2.5lbs and could even be a pound heavier.

well done, nice eel too.
