| Taking the lads fishing I decided to take my lad and his friend down to a local commercial lake for the day. His friend has only been pier fishing twice, with poor results, so we thought we would give him an introduction to carp fishing. My lad has been carp fishing nearly 2 years now, and his favourite method (like mine) is using freelined floating pellets to take carp off the surface so off we went armed with a bag of chum mixer. The forecast was for sunny periods, and showers, and for once the weathermen got it right, even down to the thunderstorm that was forecast for midday! The lake was fairly empty throughout the day, which meant we could move around the lake trying to get the carp feeding off the surface at various swims. It was dry and warm when we arrived, but after 30 mins we had a downpour. It didnt last too long, then the sun came out, and it got very humid and sweaty (polaroids kept steamng up all the time). Then the thunderstorm arrived, and it chucked it down again (makes it difficult to see your chum mixer when its raining so heavy). Eventually that passed, and it was back to the humidity again. After setting up one of my rods and explaining to my sons friend Connor, how to go about using floating mixer, we left him to it, but he was only a few yards away if he needed us. It wasnt long before some carp started showing on the surface in his swim, so I went and stood by Connor - and after several missed takes he finally got the timing right, and was into his first carp. Nothing huge, about 5 or 6lb, and he was chuffed to bits. Now he had sussed out how to lift the rod, just at the right moment, there was no stopping him. We caught quite a few fish - at least 12 carp each, with a few low doubles thrown in such as a carp of 11lb 12oz for me, and a 12lb 8oz for my son Aaron which was a personal best for him. (He also caught the most - at least 15 carp for him). It was nearing teatime, and another downpour just as we were deciding whether to pack up or not made the decision to head home a lot easier. Connor enjoyed his day carp fishing, and is keen to get a full rod licence as soon as he can so he can come out with us at short notice (we had to wait for the post office to open to get him a day licence before we could set off). A nice day out, and the carp were in a fighting mood too - great fun. My first fish of the day [IMG] [/IMG]Aaron - dwarfed by the reeds [IMG] [/IMG]Connor - concentrating on getting that first carp [IMG] [/IMG]Result ! - Connor with his first carp - the smile says it all [IMG] [/IMG]One of Aarons [IMG] [/IMG]Last one of the day - very thick and fat - must be all those chum mixers! | Re: Taking the lads fishing Thanks Justin, and Peter. Very funny Peter - - and it seems he is beating me at carp too, as he had the most and the biggest carp on the day. I end up doing all the running around, netting fish, sorting out more hair rigs etc, dishing out the cuppa's, and sandwiches, so miss out on some of the fish (well thats my excuse anyway )As long as they enjoy themselves - gets them off that bloomin XBOX and out in the fresh air, which is one good thing. |
