| 5 days on club waters Spend 5 days with Les to fish our club waters 14th June until the 20th. I arrived on the Tuesday at 11.02am. Les picked me up from the train station. We had a jaunt to a tackle auction, what a waste of time, the prices were scandalous. Although Les did get some rather nice bank sticks for a good price, I did buy two from him. We then went the local animal feed shop to buy some crumb. We decided to go and have a short session at Blyton pond. We arrived at about 4pm. Les managed to land some fish, a nice common to end the session weighing in at approx3 lbs. We popped into the local bar for a beer; we intended to call at the local Chinese take away for a meal. But there was a chap eating a rather nice looking plate of curry in the bar, so we decided to stay and have the meal in the bar, and very nice it was. On Wednesday we decided to fish Trent Haven pond. Nothing much to report. We both blanked. I fished the feeder using maggot and corn, Les also fished the feeder but opted for the waggler approach. Although we blanked it was a most pleasurable day on the bank side. Thursday, the Glorious 16th. Up at silly o’clock to get to Warping Drain. We arrived at around 5.30am. We chose our pegs and set up, I fished the feeder yet again. I used maggot and worm. I also fed chopped worm in the open ended feeder. Les also fished the feeder, he also had the waggler set up After the second cast my rod tip twitched, I picked it up and felt a resistance, I struck into it, I had to put the anti reverse on to let the fish run, SNAP, ! it got away. Throughout the day Les and myself must have had only five or six bites between us ! Yet further upstream tench to 6.5 pounds were being landed. At around lunch time the British Waterways decided to send the weed cutting boat out, then the dredger came past, oh well, that’s life. Here he is ![]() We decided to pack up and call it a day at around 3pm. We decided to go and have a pub lunch at the local hostelry, steak pie with trimming. Oh and the club is just around the corner, YES we did call for a few beers. Friday saw us at Thornton Abbey. We had to cut out two pegs, the greenery had taken over, hard work I can tell you. After we had cut the pegs it was tea time. A good day for both of us from the first cast. We both fished the feeder again, with maggot and worm for hook bait. Worm faired better, the maggot only brought smaller fish. Lots of skimmer’s, roach and rudd came to the hook. We also caught what looked like rudd/skimmer hybrids, roach/skimmer hybrids. I was the first to catch but Les was not far behind. We both had a very good catch on the day, a 100 plus fish easily. The fish decided to stop feeding at about 2.30pm.The weather decided to turn nasty later on in the day. The sky looked very heavy with rain, Les looked at me and I said “are you thinking what I’m thinking “ and with that we both started to tackle down. We just managed to pack the car and the Heavens opened up. Very heavy rain indeed. Saturday saw us back at Thornton Abbey. We managed to get the same pegs as Fridays jaunt. The pegs were a bit wetter and waterlogged but still very comfortable. Fishing was not so prolific as Friday. The fish were slow to come to the hook. Again we both fished the feeder, Les did have the waggler out for a while. Again worm faired better, bringing the better sized fish. Things did get hectic for three or so hours, then it went a bit quiet. Although we were picking up fish at a steady rate. I saw my rod tip bouncing and struck into it. Got it, then the fish decided to fight like hell. After a brief tussle I landed the fish, this cracking perch, best fish of the day. ![]() ![]() We continued to catch fish steadily. But yet again the weather turned nasty, the heavy rain clouds were looming not far, we could see the rain pouring down. Without a word we both started to pack up. And yet again we just managed to pack the car and the Heavens opened up. We got to Les’s and ran in, LoL, we had a cuppa and changed our slightly wet clothes. What are we having for tea I asked Les, don’t know came the reply. I picked a takeaway menu up and suggested Chinese takeaway. I opted for special curry and chips, les opted for special chow mein. Very nice indeed. Les gave Bob a ring and we arranged to meet up on Sunday. Again we fished Thornton Abbey. We got the same pegs as the previous days. Bob got tucked in behind a bush next to our pegs. Yet again the fishing was slow to start with, we both fished the feeder with worm and maggot for hookbait. Again we caught , skimmers, roach, rudd and hybrids. Bob was fairing better, he was catching a fish a cast. Suddenly Les grabbed his rod and started to tussle with it, he landed this cracker. ![]() This fish decided to lasso itself on Les's line. ![]() Again we had a steady catch rate. Another good day on the bankside. And would you believe it, yet again the weather turned nasty, and yet again we just managed to miss the downpour. LoL. We arrived back at Les’s house and got the car unpacked and cleaned. I packed my suitcase for the following days departure. In all another great time fishing our club waters with a good amount of fish caught. The opening day was a let down but that’s fishing for you. Once again Les thanks for your hospitality. Picture time. The Abbey ruins ![]() Les on his Warping Drain peg ![]() And my peg next to Les ![]() Les deep in concentation on Trent Haven pond ![]() And where would we be without the bacon and eggs in the pan ![]() Thanks for reading __________________ Tight lines Regards Andy |

| Re: 5 days on club waters Thanks fishy one, The cutter ticked a lot of anglers off mate. Some of them even chucked balls of groundbait at him, LoL I counted 6 anglers pack up and leave their pegs. But you would have thought the disturbance from the boat would have stirred the bottom up and at least got the fish to feed ?? __________________ Tight lines Regards Andy |

| Re: 5 days on club waters Quote:
Day tickets are not allowed as such. Its a " day membership ticket " and the angler had to be accompanied by a full member on the day at any venue. If you live near Wartping drain or indeed Lady Pitt, its well worth the £35 a year subs. I travel down from Sunderland to fish the venues. Staying a week at a time. Have a look at the waters we have. http://www.scunthorpepoliceangling.co.uk/index.htm __________________ Tight lines Regards Andy |
