Tidal River Fishing (River Parrett)

I am thinking of giving my local tidal River Parrett a go above the town of Bridgwater.

Upstream of Bridgwater until Oath Lock (NTL) the channel narrows. It is about 5 - 10 miles from the Bristol Channel which it discharges into.

I have never fished a tidal river before, can anyone give me any advice on if its best to fish on a rising tide, an outgoing tide, neap tide.

I am after coarse species and a bit further up I have seen Roach and have heard their are some nice Chub.

I was thinking of trotting with maggots, does that sound the best tactic?

The river has a high silt content and very muddy banks from the rise and fall of the tide
