a quick species dash

up at 0400 to nip down to the stour at canterbury
its one of my old haunts and always reliable for a few fish,
the plan was to grab a chub and a dace for the species hunt

got to the river at 0500 and got quite a shock ,the towpath had been given a wide path of tarmac and access was limited due to building work

i did sort out a swim of sorts with a nice little glide of about a foot wide between streamer weed
i elected to take the maggot approach and flicked a small maggot feeder out with a size 14 and 2 of the wriggling little blighters on the end,
after 30 minutes of regular feeding and casting i got my first bite,i hooked a good fish and it took me into the weed 3 times but was soon nestling in the net
a good chub of about 2 -2 1/2lb

i was tempted to stay for some more but i wanted that dace,
walked back to the car,there is a shallow stretch of river by the car park which looked good,i set up the float rod and second trot through resulted in this nice little dace

that was it,mission accomplished and home by 0700,
isn't it nice when a plan comes together
