| Down the local, with chum mixer..again I had a couple of hours to spare Saturday afternoon, so nipped down to a local lake for an afternoon session with chum mixer. For some reason, the carp were not very willing to feed off the top, and it took a lot of patience, and baiting up various swims to get the odd carp to start feeding. I had chucked some pellets in various swims, and wandered back to the first swim and after 20 minutes or so I saw a carp come up and take one of the mixers. The wind was a bit blustery, and I had problems positioning my freelined chum mixer into the correct position, right in the margin under a tree, without it snagging in the trailing branches. After a couple of attemps I managed to get it in place, and sure enough the carp took the mixer, and immediately turned and sped off. The only problem was that the wind had caught some of my free line, and it had wrapped around the reel handle - the line suddenly tightened and the fish got off, though It didnt snap the line thankfully. Typically it would have been the biggest fish of the day. I ventured round the lake, trying various swims and the end result was 4 carp, biggest about 8lb or so. The fish activity in the lake was minimal too, even in the usual spots, or islands, where they are always topping the surface - nothing! Not sure if it was because of the wind, higher water levels, and the water a bit more coloured than usual or what. It was a nice afternoon out though, and its always exciting taking them off the top. Some photo's of the lake (on a much more sunnier and settled day, unlike yesterday which was wind/blustery) I can normally nab one off the surface in the gap between the ivy covered tree and the bush to its right[IMG] [/IMG]The back end of the lake, not many access points to the water due to the amount of bankside trees and foliage, but this is where the bigger carp are[IMG] [/IMG]One of the more popular swims, where they fish hard up to the island. The tree has numerous floats and lines dangling off it that have got snagged on it over the years ![]() One of yesterdays carp - although it doesnt look it, the carp was extremely broad accross its back and was a lot heavier than it looks[IMG] [/IMG] |
