Re: My first week away

Well I am back from 3 days and 2 nights fishing in Suffolk. The lake was about a footy pitch wide and 2 long and between 5-6 foot deep. There was plenty of features and a large island with loads of over hangs. On day one I was plagued by a huge carp who just would not p*ss off from my swim, he just seemed happy to play 'lift the bobbin' as he lifted my lines and annoy me for about 5 hours. He must have been 20lb+ and just kept cruising up and down on the surface.

It proved to be a very hard fight to catch the fish despite it being visably stocked with plenty of double figure carp. On wednesday afternoon we had a wander towards the island as the lake seemed dead in the warm sun. I was stunned to see about 40 to 50 double figure carp just gently cruising the margins of the island. As the evening set it they started jumping, it is quite a spectacle to see 20lb+ carp clearing the lake in the evening sun.

No amount of dog buscuit, bread etc got their interest, I guess if their not feeding their not feeding. We kept on trying until tea time.

By this time we had had minimal bites, nothing in the day on the feeder but a steady stream of perch, roach, tench etc on the float. At about 7.30pm I was sat pondering tactics when i was wistled from a couple of swims down and eagerly benconed to help. I ran down to find myself duty photographer for a chap who had just landed his third fish in 2 hours, this one being a 25.3 mirror. It was at this point I decided to interigate the very helpful chap to find out how to fish the lake.

After about an hour of casting tips, rig set up and bait presentation I was ready to start again with the advice to sleep in the day and fish at night !

So thats axactly what I did. Snow man pop up rigs 3 inches above the silk weed and the confidence to leave the rods alone and keep chucking out boilies, worked a treat!

My set up

I ended up with a fish about every 2 hours each night from dusk till dawn, all of which were double figure fish. I beat my PB on common and mirror with 16.1 and 16.4 respectively. The common was huge and you could have easily blagged a photo and put it at 25lb, really long and lean with a whales tail. It's just a shame it was 1.30am and 3.50am when I had them. No one about to take a pic as my mates wer,nt set up for night fishing. This is the best I can offer.

All in all it was a great trip once we new how, Thanks to Grant the helpful stranger for his help and advice, he even came down the next day to see how I was getting on. He PB'd aswell when i first met him with a 29.7 mirror.

I would strongly advise a visit to Carlton Meres holiday park in Saxmundum, very, very quiet and immaculatly kept.

Here are a few pics , I am waiting for a couple from my mates camera of me actually with a fish..

The lake

Indian take away and fishing...pure bliss.

Re: My first week away

Please note there are only a limited amount of bank that can be fished unless you are a resident of the park. The availiable swims are usually heaving on weekends so it may be best to phone first.

The cruising fish, particularly at this time of year, are often not interested in feeding and seem to be preparing for spawning. I would question why anglers are so adamant to try and catch these fish when they are clearly not feeding and are in a quite vulnerable state.

Please follow the rules and, more importantly, look after the fish.

Bailiffs frequent the lakes to check you are abiding to the rules and have the relevant ticket and licence. They do not do this to cause nusience, simply to police the rules.

Regards

Willy
