| A day of mixed fortunes Woke up and looked out of the window on Saturday morning and it was tipping it down. Fortunately I had planned to go fishing on Sunday... I had arranged to go fishing with my brother-in-law. He is from Guyana and the fishing he had done before involved a small basket on the end of a tree branch. We got to the lake just after midday and set up. I couldn't find my drop off indicators or fake bait so had to resort to twigs and usual actual real sweetcorn. After not very long at all we had a carp on the hook. I had made the mistake of not putting the landing net together so we lost that one by the water edge but it looked like a nice one. Next up had the second of the day and we landed this one. A little common of about 5-6lbs at a guess. This was struck and landed by my brother-in-law and the first fish caught using a hook and line. He seemed to be pretty pleased. Third and fourth carps came not long after. Then came the tree as I cast out to an island and lost end tackle as it pinged from one branch straight into another. Oh well, at least my grinner knot tying with cold, wet hands is getting better. Then I cast out and almost as soon as the bait hit the water then the bite alarm went off. At first I ignored it because it went off so soon but when it happened again I struck and my goodness the rod tip bent right over. There are carp to just over 20lb in this lake apparently and this felt stronger than any I have fished before. I will never know how big (or small but really strong) this fish was as the handle on my reel snapped clean off. I was not best pleased as you might imagine. At this point we went home to a lovely roast dinner cooked by my wife. So, in less than 3 hours we had 5 on the hook, 3 landed and a broken reel. I'm looking forward to the next time already. :) |
