Severn and Stour for Roach. Went out with the intention of fishing for roach on the Severn. Tried a new area for me, Arley. Walked from the car park to the far end of the island to the only swim that did not look like it was flowing as fast. River was up and coloured though fining down . The colour put me right off. Regardless I fished a 7 foot deep swim patiently feeding maggots and thinking I was wasting my time. Confidence is key to fishing , I reckon . So after giving it about an hour and a half I binned it and walked back to the car. Whatever happens though I always feel fortunate to live near this mighty river and no session is ever a waste of time. Decided that I'd drop in on the Stour at Stourton though this was a gamble as I only really rate one swim here during the winter. Sods law , it was taken by a bloke out fishing with his dad. He had a few roach and a chub or two so good for him. I settled in a swim about thirty yards down from the wier where there's a steady flow between some bushes that don't quite overhang the river and some weed beds. Steady feed of maggots lead to nothing and I blanked. The water temp (I've started recording this as I want to see if it's a factor or not) was 3.9 degrees in the Stour. Unfortuntely I did not measure the Severn. Ho hum! Curry and lager it is then. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() __________________ Just remember, not all the heroes died. www.helpforheroes.org.uk

Re: Severn and Stour for Roach. Golf, yes I've got my clubs in the garage. I've played your local course once too (Dinas Powis), with that blind uphill par 3. Took both my nephews up the golf range (I think for the first time each) a few months ago and they loved it. Both of them were pretty good. Owain was three at the time and already cloating them 50 yards so Dan has taken him more since. Harvey was quiet so I thought he wasn't enjoying it till he ran out of balls and looked up and said "can we do more of this ?". It's nice when you can do things like that in fishing or golf. I seem to spend my winters practising and then don't pay enough attention in the summer to go fishing enough. Hoping to put that right this year, I've got a plan. June July August Tench - get to know Dudmaston (assuming Kinver have got some places that is). August Sep Oct Barbel Sep Oct River Roach. Lake Roach Oct NovDec River generally Nov Dec Pike. Of course there's still the bit till June which I am filling in with doing what seems like a good idea. I am planning on visting a commercial or two though as I doubt they are quite the "turn up and catch a ton" places we sometimes have them down as. One thing I do know is that if I have to be exiled to England then I live in a pretty good spot for coarse fishing. There's loads of places round here and even when I am blanking there is something about being next to a big river that is just a joy in itself. __________________ Just remember, not all the heroes died. www.helpforheroes.org.uk Last edited by barbelblanker; 01-23-2011 at 10:31 AM.

Re: Severn and Stour for Roach. Went for an hour or two at the Salwarpe. Anyone selling a crown green bowling kit? Two twigs and a discarded pike trace. SAW some fish this time though. Tiny roach probably. __________________ Just remember, not all the heroes died. www.helpforheroes.org.uk

Re: Severn and Stour for Roach. Mike, that's the way I look at it and it means when the water warms up and the fish are feeding I'm not sat there wondering how to tackle up again. __________________ Just remember, not all the heroes died. www.helpforheroes.org.uk
