Son shows me how to do it..again..

Ventured out to Exeter canal again today, and as it was half term, took Aaron with me as he promised to do his homework when we got back home. Cloudy with a light sw wind in morning, but then sun came out in the afternoon and the wind picked up and was whipping along the canal towards the end of the afternoon.
The weed was clearing in most areas, so I used a diving lure, and Aaron opted for his small 2 inch shad again, as he had quite a bit of success on it last trip, and he wanted to try and catch some bigger perch, as I had told him of BaggieRich's large perch which was caught in the basin when he fished the canal with Dave last winter.
After an hour I hooked a pike, and as it came to the net I could see it was very lightly hooked by the bottom treble, right on the tip of is mouth. Needless to say I was overstretched when trying to net it (Aaron had wandered off further down the canal so couldnt help) and the treble caught on the lip of the net, and with a shake of its head, it got off. A fish of about 7or 8lb.
I hooked and lost another pike, but eventually landed one later on in the day, but only a small jack of about 4lb. I have nevery really had many follows when pike fishing (the canal is quite deep in some of the margins so perhaps if the pike do follow they are deep and not easy to see), however today I had 4 follows which I clearly saw - and 3 of them were by large pike, well into double figures, appearing out of nowhere as my lure came into the margins, and then sitting motionless for 5/10 seconds before slowly turning away with a flick of their tails, despite my best efforts at trying to entice a take. 2 of the pike came back for a second look too on the next casts. I have made a mental note of the general areas I saw the fish, but in places the canal is long, straight and featureless so I doubt if I will remember the exact spots.

Anway we finally ended up at the Turf basin, and Aaron wandered off to try for some perch. He ended up around the other side of the basin, jigging his shad in amongst the moorings and pontoons directly opposite me, and it wasnt long before he shouted over that he had a nice perch on. I ran round with the net, only to find he had managed to land it himself, and I was gobsmacked when he held up a 3lb 1 oz perch. He has only ever caught 4 perch, 3 of which were caught last time we were out, so he is chuffed to bits with todays specimen. He went on to catch a couple more perch but they were quite small, plus he hooked and lost a jack twice.
A good day out - with a nice perch, and a shame the follows didnt result in some bigger pike being hooked.

Very funny Peter -
Whereas I am a learned, experienced and proficient angler, he on the other hand is a jammy sod
Boldbear - here is the link to the shad that he used - just rigged it with a jighead hook and away he went. They are very good shads, great action on the tails.
