Our Own Private Lake - 26.09.10

Well it was about 3 years ago now that me and my friend james had stocked a pond in one of his fields that had been dug out by a digger to increase/depth. We stocked it with about 60/70 roach and we have left it to its own devices until today!

We have been walking by it many a time and not really paying much attention too it but at the same time always wondering about how they were getting on.

Well today was the day we would find out. We set off after lunch for an hour or two to see what we could manage. So armed with a loaf a bread and simple waggler tactics we got to work.

The first fish came to us as a shock cause we really weren't overly confident! And too our surprise it was a very small roach, which got us thinking that the fish were breeding, and it turns out they are cause it is teeming with small roach only at a few ounces in weight.

So it made us more determined to catch a few of the original roach we put in, and it wasnt long until we caught a few, pushing 3/4lb i'm sure.

This put a smile on our face like no fish had done for a while, cause they were our fish, in our lake that we had stocked. Something special about that so there is. We have named the pond/lake; 'Lake Blackwater', no prizes for guessing why! lol

All in all we are two very happy people!

Justin.

I thought we had decided it was called the 'boob tube'?

We are stocking about 20/30 rudd into it next week and then a few perch to keep disease down and that will be it finished unless we splash the cash on a couple of big koi!

I still need to get that goldfish out of the pond in the garden for our hunt actually, so maybe this week sometime when i get home from school and no one is about i'll have a crack at them

Before fish are introduced into any inland waterway (with a few exceptions such as garden ponds and other registered fish farms) the Environment Agency insists that a 'Section 30 Stocking Consent' is obtained from them prior to any introduction
.

best check for your part of the world

garden ponds are the exception

you have to prove that it is a garden pond

8-12ft of fish per 1000 gallons ( 4500 litres)

Re: Our Own Private Lake - 26.09.10

Generally it is better to stock new waters with fish of the same year class random stocking can cause problems with unbalanced populations leading to disease, stunted fish and not the best fishery. I am sure the enviroment agency will fall over backwards to help with advice and may even provide you with a few fish. Undeclared stocking can be a big and expensive problem.
