| Too much sun, no wind, ...and a jack Decided to nip down the canal again the other day. Forecast said cloudy with sunny spells, and sw wind. Thought I would chuck a few surface lures out for any pike lurking in wait. Got there earlier than planned (for once) and at least I saw a nice sunrise as I stepped out the car. Well to cut a long story short, it turned out baking hot, very sunny all day, and not a breath of wind on the canal till mid afternoon, plus the algae was not in the margins as it was last week, but there were patches of it everwhere, which made it difficult to find clear spots to cast -not the best piking conditions. I didnt blank however, catching one jack of about 5lb. I got that early on about 0800. As I brought the lure back in to the side, I saw some reeds twitch and move just a couple of yards along from where I was standing. Its either a duck, or a fish I thought, so I flicked the lure along to the reeds, and bingo, a pike came racing out the reeds and nailed the lure. I also missed a big lunker which smashed into the lure but threw the hook, and despite several re-casts to the area the pike didnt show again. I also missed a couple of small jacks and perch in the margins. Still, it was a nice day for walking along the canal bank. Roll on a few weeks time when hopefully the weed and algae starts dying off. | Re: Too much sun, no wind, ...and a jack Oh Dave, I forgot to mention. I drove down to the Swans Nest, however the road is closed, as they are laying tarmac on the road to the carpark, and also in the carpark as well - so hopefully no more potholes. They should be finished in a week or so. Perhaps they may do the lime kilns road and carpark too..you never know.. |
