| A week with Colin and Les, SPAC waters I met Colin at Newcastle airport on Thursday 19th August. We came home for a bite to eat, Kaths home made steak and kidney pie with trimmings. Colin flew in on the 07.50am flight from Ireland to have a 5 days fishing. We left for the train to get to sunny Skunny. We had a bit of a episode going down, we were notified at York there was a fire near the train line South of Doncaster, our change over station. The fire was in a warehouse at Crowle. Not to worry, LoL We arrived at Les's an hour late, but in one peice. Hand shaked and greeting out of the way, we carried on to Asda for some food etc. Friday morning up with the larks, very silly o'clock time, to get to the River Trent, LadyPitt stretch, we just beat another car load of anglers to the wier pegs, LoL Les jumped on peg three. i had two and the big fella peg one. We all fished the feeder on our barbel rods. Our baits of the day were , sweet corn, pellets, boillies. And a mix of brown crumb with halibut groundbait, laced with sweet corn. After changing and experimenting with baits it was down to the good old sweet corn to attract the fish. Cilon was the first to land a fish, a fine barbel. Action stations ![]() ![]() He was again into a fish not long after, another fine barbel. ![]() His last fish of the day was this handsome Chub. ![]() I had just the two barbel, both fell to sweetcorn hookbaits. ![]() And this cracker, very slin and lean. ![]() Les landed four barbel on the day, here they are in their glory ![]() ![]() ![]() Sorry no picture of barbel number four. Colin and i relaxing after a rather nice bacon and egg sandwich cooked fresh by Les. ![]() I did not get a picture of the last one for some reason Saturday saw us at Blyton Ponds. A decent day, but if i recall, a bit blustery. It was a late start to the day, but not to worry, a good sleep in was good for the soul, LoL I fished feeder near the island, sweetcorn and pellet for hookbait, using maggot only attracts the small roach all day, great for a bit of fun on the waggler, and great for the youngsters to get the feel of fishing. A little late on Colin went on floating bread, and it paid off. Colin had for decent carp off the top. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Come to the net ![]() ![]() Colin looking to see if Les had the bacon on and the kettle for a cup of tea, ![]() Les on his peg ![]() I had a few skimmers on pellet, and i think Les had a couple of carp on floating bread. We called it a day and left for home. Sunday Trent Haven, what a horrible day, high winds all day. Colin and i chose pegs next to each other whiole Les stayed at the top of the pond. The fishing was very slow, as we were told in the club on Friday night it was. I fished the feeder with sqeetcorn and pellet yet again, perch after perch came to the hook. Colin fared better with the odd roach, Les, i think he blanked. The wind picked up and the it was time to go home. Monday With the heavy rain and high winds forecast we all decided not to vebture on the bankside today. Instead we showed Colin some more of the club waters. Warping Drain had him salivating at the sight of the place. We stood on the small bridge and Colin was rather over excited when he saw a huge chub swim past, at least we took it to be a chub. We went to a few other places after that. The wind got stronger and the heavy rain poured down, terrible weather. Colin on his peg ![]() My peg ![]() Tuesday. Back to Ladypitt, again the wind was terrible today. We arrived to see another angler waiting at the gate to get to the stretch. Being first he got the wier pegs, we had a look down at pegs 22./23 and 24 , but Les wanted to fish the meadow. We got up to the very top of the meadow and picked our pegs. Fished the feeder yet again, sweetcorn , pellet and maggot for hookbaits. Colin and i fished next to each other. Las was on the next peg up, brolly up for protection against the very high wind. Alas the fishing was very slow, gudgeon after gudgean fell to the hook bait, snag after snag took our line, and the wind, phew it became that strong it blew Les's brolly inside out. We packed up and left. We stopped and chatted with the chap who we saw we=hen we arrived, he had caught one barbel on the wier peg, but the flow was that strong he could not hold bottom, so he moved to a more slower pwg. He told us that he had caught 22 BARBEL on Saturday, yes 22, that was also the news that we were given in the club on Friday night. O the bottom pegs it was like a diffrent day, very little wind, you are protected by tree's and bushes, but not to worry, we had been fishing. We said our farewells to the chap and left. Wednesday, Les took Colin back to Blyton, I stayed at Les's and yet again made the bacon sarnies and tea for them coming home. I'm sure Colin will tell you about his day. We left for the train staion at 12.45pm, only to fine that when we got there busses outside of the station. Les chipped in with " Looks like your getting the bus " I got to the main office and asked what was wrong, trouble on the track was the reply. Not to worry we thought plenty of time to get to Doncaster for our connection to Newcastle, BUT, we were told we may MISS OUR CONNECTION , we had paid for our seats, bloody hell i thought. Les bid farewell and left for home. We were delayed at the train staion for almost an hour, missing our connection, we had to report to the station managers office to have our return tickets endorsed by him, just as welll because that hout delay could have cost us a new and more expensive train thicket home, But we looked at it as part of the adventure, LoL Colin stayed the night at our home, we hada day in the town and a couple of hours in the local tackle shop, i rplaced the stuff that had been lost over the days we fished. Colin left at 14.00hrs for Newcastle Airport for his short flight back to Ireland. It was a pleasure to have Colin visit and to fish with, and again as ever a please with Les and his hospitality. Until the next time, Thanks for reading __________________ Tight lines Regards Andy |
