| An evening catching Chub on our local stream After a week of unsettled wet weather my son and I were both looking forward to an evening on our local stream; which should have been washed through taking any silt with it and with the gravel showing through and with a bit of depth where the Barbel would feel a little more confident and with their renewed appetites were queing up for our baits but we soon came back to reality as soon as we saw the extremely low water level. The rain that we had on and off all of the previous week had not even made a dent in the water table and must have just run off the hard surface layer and washed away in just a few hours. Although we did see a nice Barbel swimming through our swims we couldn’t spot any more Barbel although there were quite a few Chub that would put a bend in our rods. I decided to use rough pieces of spicey luncheonmeat torn from the block and mounted directly onto the hook. We both had 4 or 5 nice Chub of around 2lb to 3lb+ and thoroughly enjoyed the evening even though neither of us had managed to have a Barbel on the bank, I did have one classic Barbel bite as it got darker, but it managed to shed the hook on a far bank root ridden undercut. ![]() My largest Chub of the session a 3lb 4oz Chevin ![]() Stuarts best of the evening a 3lb 8oz Chub One of my chub had a slightly deformed head (see pic) which seemed a little strange but it looked in fine condition other than that. ![]() I hear we are in for another week of wet weather so lets hope that it starts to top up the ground water and the river levels improve a bit. | Re: An evening catching Chub on our local stream Thanks Nick. It almost looked like the head section had stopped growing with the rest of the fish at one point and looked a little strange. __________________ My Web Site (The Average Coarse Angler) Happiness is Fish Shaped (It used to be woman shaped but the wifes getting on a bit now) |
