I had a couple of hours to spare yesterday afternoon so I thought I pop up to the Kennet & Avon canal to try for a Ruffe for the species hunt. Picked up one of our club exchange tickets & half a pint of maggots from Steves tackle at Warminster & by 3.30 I was up on the canal near Stanton St Bernard. The banks were very overgrown & it was obvious that nobody had fished here for months. First job was to attach my homemade mini sythe to the end of a bankstick & use it to clear a swim. I then fed some maggots & mini pellets to the overhanging far bank bushes & set up my pole at about 9 meters. Almost immediately I started catching small Roach, rudd bream & perch. I really cannot understand why more people don't fish this water, as it's stuffed full of fish, with carp to 30lb & some of the hardest fighting bream I've ever come accross. Boat traffic was fairly light with only half a dozen canal barges passing all evening. The fish appear to be used to the passing traffic as I was catching fish in the wake of the boats as they went past. After an hour or so I started catching some better size bream. I also lost a large fish that I think was probably a tench. Then a little black cloud sneaked up behind me & it was at this point that I realised that I had not brought a brolly or waterproof.... ![]() ![]() The rain came down in torrents & the storm lasted about 5 minutes. Enough to leave me soaked to the skin.... Fortunately the rain was warm. Once it had passed I thought i'd best pack up & head home for a change of clothes. I'd still had an enjoyable evening & caught a tidy bag of fish. Still after that elusive Ruffe though... ![]() The raincloud heads off along the canal in search of another victim....note how overgrown the banks are ![]() ![]() __________________ Don't Judge My Path If You Haven't Walked My Journey...

Re: A quick shower on the Kennet & Avon Well done, thats a decent bag of fish. A bag like that isn't too common a site over here any more which is a real pity. __________________ Blackwater Tackle Supplies Keep Ulster's Waters Healthy, Practice Catch and Release!

Re: A quick shower on the Kennet & Avon What a pleasant couple of hours you had, and with the place to yourself. Those overhanging branches on the far bank look very inviting. Shame about your Ruffe not showing this time. __________________ My Web Site (The Average Coarse Angler) Happiness is Fish Shaped (It used to be woman shaped but the wifes getting on a bit now)
