Another venue for the first time..

I decided to try a small lake in Cornwall for the first time yesterday.
Set off early, with my trusty bucket of method mix, and some chum mixer. The route to the lake meant driving down some country back lanes, and although it looked easy to find on Google map, and is only about 30 mins drive from where I live, it aint easy at 0500 when you are half asleep and its still dark, but got there in the end.
The carpark is just above the lake, with a toilet, and small hut so you can leave your payment in the box provided. There is a nice mown path curving down from the gravel carpark to one corner of the lake. There are dustbins at various locations around the lake, plus 2 landing net dip tanks, one on each side of the lake. The grass around the lake was also mown, and there was a nice backdrop of trees, plus lots of foliage, bushes, reeds and shrubbery etc around the margins. A local farmer owns and looks after the lake, renting out accommodation for holidaymakers/tourists at a cottage at the top of the hill overlooking the lake.
There are 2 small islands, one basically just big enough for one large tree, and the other larger island towards the bottom end of the lake looked the more inviting with lots of overhanging trees and branches trailing in the water. It turned out 2 groups of anglers had bivvied up on opposite sides of the lake, accross from the smaller island so I made my way down to the larger island.
I only set up one rod initially, using method feeder with 2 pop up sweetcorn and split shot to counter balance. Had my first fish after about an hour - a hard fighting carp of about 10lbs, which was in nice condition. Things were a bit slow, though I had another carp of similar size in about another hour. All were taken close to the island. As it warmed up a bit, I brought in the method rod, and set up the other rod for free lining chum mixer. It was hard to find carp in the margins, and when you did find them they were very reluctant to take the floaters, and would often shy away from the free offerings at the last second. I persevered, and caught another very hard fighting fish of about 8lbs. I decided to wander round the lake trying various swims with mixer, and eventually caught another 3 over the next 2 hours, including one from a heavily overgrown area with not much room to fish in. It took the bait about 2 inches from the margin, amongst floating leaves, bramble thorns, and dangling tree roots. Luckily it ran from the snags, into clearer water, and despite getting my net caught on branches as I tried to
get the net into the water, and then slipping on my ass, I managed to net it eventually.
Spent the last hour or two back on the method again, and landed 3 more, biggest about 11lbs, with the last fish coming on my last cast, as I left the rod out longer than usual as I was packing everything away, so it was a nice surprise when the alarm sounded.I didnt do too badly, as the 2 other groups of anglers (4 anglers in total) had arrived the day before, sleeping overnight and 2 of them had not caught anything yet, and the other 2 had caught some, but not many, so I felt I had done quite well considering.
Its a nice lake to fish, with the biggest carp possibly about 17/18lb, and I will definately go back for another go, and perhaps do an overnight session with
my son.

THE BOTTOM END OF THE LAKE. THE TALLER GROUP OF TREES (JUST TO LEFT OF MY BROLLY) IS ACTUALLY THE ISLAND. THERE IS ONLY ABOUT 10/15 YARDS BETWEEN THE BACK OF ISLAND AND THE LAKE MARGIN.

GOT A FISH FROM HERE, ON FLOATER THOUGH IT WAS A BIT TIGHT

AND FINALLY....COUPLE OF FISHIES..

Re: Another venue for the first time..

Yep Nick, I was surprised. Apart fromt the 2 pairs who were making a weekend of it, only one other angler turned up, but he left at about mid day.
