In Search of a Perch Decided yesterday that it was about time i managed to bag my self a decent perch. So i got the car packed up with my match fishing gear, pole etc, a lure rod and my shimano beastmaster barbel rod 11ft 1 1/4lb tc. The plan was to arrive at the venue and get the pole kitted out to try and catch a few live baits while trying to add to my species tally for this year. I spread a few maggots in the swim and a couple of big balls of ground bait. First cast and a nice little skimmer bream comes in. Another species but to big for a perch livebait. Got the pole back out and a nice little rudd came in, he was un aware that he was a perfect bait size, so tossed him in the net and set about rigging up a livebait rig on the shimano. A simple running ledger rig was used with a small double hook trace, sat on a bite alarm with a solar drop off for bite indication. (only used an alarm cause i was still going to fish the pole). Cast the rudd livebait to a gap in the lilly's and continued with the pole. On the pole i was getting a lot of bites from the small fish but missing quite a few, so i stepped down my hook size to a 22. Continued with the pole and had Rudd, Roach, Skimmer, and Dace, thats another 4 for my personal species quest of 25 this year (sea and coarse) I was just having a 5 min break from the pole when a single bleep on the alarm alerted me to a deffinate bite on the livebait, with the soft shimano tip being pulled very hard, a couple of loops off the baitrunner and i picked up the rod a sweeped it back. I immediately connected with a fish and thought it must be a pike as it felt too good for a perch. Got the fish to the surface and couldn't believe the size of the perch staring back at me. I slid it over the lilly's with heart in mouth and breathed a sigh of relief when the net slipped under the red fins. A punch to the air and a big "Woooooohooooo" greated this amazing catch. Wet the sling zeroe'd the scales and slipped in the fish as i lifted slowly i thought it was 2 1/2lb easy. The needle jumped as the fish moved but when settled at a tad over 3lb. ![]() What a fish!! so that will be 5 species and a new massive 3lb Perch PB Grin Grin Grin Grin and i still have a massive grin!

Re: In Search of a Perch Fantastic Perch mate. Even better when you targetted the species. I've not caught a specimen Perch for years, I would love to get another. I bet it was bigger than the photo makes out as they have a real presence in life, something the camera never captures very well.

Re: In Search of a Perch Cheers Mate, Yeah the photo's don't do it justice at all. I had read somewhere that the place i fished held some good perch, but was very pleased when the tactics payed off on my first visit! Can't wait to get back down there, i think there may be a couple even bigger! ![]()
