| A Pleasant return to Crockerton: After fishing Crockerton last weekend and being pleasantly surprised that the fish had moved into the shallows and the lake producing some nice fish, I decided that I would venture out again last Tuesday evening. I fancied the shallows again and headed for peg 13. I arrived at around 16:30 to find 2 club members leaving so that gave me the lake to myself. As I said Peg 13 was my chosen spot. On arrival the Sun was glaring of the water making it a tad difficult to see, but I cracked on and decided to fish the waggler and I used corn as my main line of attack. I set up a loaded waggler that was full bodied with the shot being 2BB. I locked down the float with 2 no1’s and used a no4 and 2 8’s as the dropper shots. With depth a 3ft I set the float up just off the bottom, this then allowed the corn to settle the float perfectly. A View From 13 ![]() The fishing started of slow but as the evening drew in the bites started to increase. I started to catch small Skimmers and Hybrid Bream/Roach, for which they gave a good account for themselves especially the Hybrids. Hybrid ![]() Average Skimmer ![]() By 7pm I was starting to get the better quality Bream and even though they say Bream don’t fight the ones in Crockerton haven’t heard that and on light tackle they can be good fun. ![]() One of the bigger Bream ![]() Mat turned up at the lake at around 7:30 armed with his Cane rod and centre pin, he joined me by fishing in peg 12 and proceeded to fish using the float ledger and using meat as his bait. By 8:15 I called it a day and I was happy with what I caught, Matt however, wanted one more cast before he packed up and as luck would have it, Mat caught this prime Tench. ![]() Once we had packed up and headed our separate ways, I decided that I would give Crockerton another go on Friday as I had the day booked of. I arrived at the lake at 9:30ish to find a few anglers already there. But pegs 12 and 13 were free, I did fancy peg 8 but there was someone already there. So I headed for peg 12. I set the Waggler rod up same way as Tuesday evening but I also set up the pole. I decided that I would fish the Waggler on the corn again in open water and more towards the Island and the pole close in by the bush to my left with meat. ![]() I started on the Waggler and with the weather not being too good, overcast and showers and a coldish wind, the bites took their time in coming. As Tuesday evening the fish did move in and I was yet again catching some cracking Hybrids. The pole line didn’t produce as well as I expected, I had feed Bacon Grill, but the fish didn’t want to move onto the bait. Simon N came down and we had quite a chat about the club and various styles of fishing, he asked me about the pole, so I told to swap places with me and give it ago. After 30mins or so Simon had grasped the basics of pole fishing and had caught some small fish, he was only fishing about 6mtrs when I setup the pole at its full length to show him what it felt like. The rig still had bait on, so when he shipped out at 13mtrs the float shot away, the ten elastic came out and Simon was into a good fish. I talked Simon through playing the fish on the pole and then we both saw this nice Perch break the surface of the water. Simon at this point said that this was his biggest ever Perch, I took the landing net and helped him land the fish. Simon was well over the moon, Simons Perch ![]() ![]() My Final Days Catch ![]() By 5pm I decided to call it a day, the Showers were turning into downpours, the days fishing had been really good and I was very chuffed for Simon as well. I am going back on Sunday to meet up with Simon and I think Cindy as well, so I am looking forward to that, think I am going to try something different Sunday, well at least a different swim. __________________ Born to fish made to work |
