| Finally, a decent session. Went to the last stretch the BAA have on the Staff Worcs (top end nearest Wolverhampton) as I know there are chub there. I was under the impression that there were a couple in the far bank trees. So I set up opposite a tree in the water and got the pole out (very old 9.5 Ian Heaps Club, haven't replaced it yet). Sprayed a dozen or so maggots in to the far side tree (which I was going to have to cast a waggler too as the pole is not long enough) and dropped a small nip of maggots and some pinkies on the now plummeted inside , main track, line. First put through and it's a small roach, delighted, a bite and a fish. This will be fun. Fed half a dozen maggots and a few more pinkies. Next put through , float goes again, delighted again, this is going to be fun till the chub show. Except it wasn't a roach. All 9.5 meteres out and a very stretched size 6 elastic (2.3 main with 1.7 Middy Lo Viz hook length and a 22 hook) and it was a jag jag pull fight. Net goes under a chub about two pounds. Fluke. So it was spray more maggots under the tree (spray about 6 not half a gallon) and a pinch of bait on to the inside line. Had to replace the 22 as I broke it getting it out of the chubs tough lips. So I got out a barbless one instead. As I tie all my hooklengths the same length there wasn't much adjustment needed. Pole line on the inside, float goes under here we go again, this time it's bigger. Net goes under a three pound (ish) chub. Then it goes a little quiet so I just kept feeding a little on the inside and a spray over the other while I put together my small bodied waggler (Ivan marks insert waggler from donkeys years ago and the float I caught my very first roach on). Cast to the far bank but kept up the feediing. Caught a gudgeon. Switched back the inside line. Away we go. Another three pound chub. This was great. Took no more three pounders but reckon on 8 to 10 about 2 pound, three between 1 and 2 lb and some bits. ![]() Didn't take the camera or scales so I'm claiming about 20lb, first time in ages that lifting the keepnet was a weight rather than just a pathetic splash.Well chuffed and glad to at last have a decent couple of hours fishing. Went from 17:30 to 20:00. That far bank swim never did take off. I think it might have been down to the great presentation I was getting close in. Single maggot produced chub, light feeding did too. As soon as I fed too much or tried to use double maggot , the gudgeon turned up. Ease off the feed and use singe and it was chub. And I even had quiet spells, what would have happened if this had kept going I can only guess. __________________ Just remember, not all the heroes died. www.helpforheroes.org.uk |
