First, on the last, and a brace of bullheads Well, last weekend of the river seaon, so with last weekends PB pike for JP, and my fiestyt 6lb'er and the my tssle with old whiskers in the weirpool still fresh in the mind, we loaded up the Glorious Gudgeon and made our way to Foxham. I'm sad to say that I blanked on Saturday, whilst Jp got into a gudeon and another member Geoff also netted a ruffe, those fish are everywhere...... On Sunday, things were considerably better. I had it in mind to give the Railway Pool a quick go, so after we arrived at the river, and set out gear down in a couple of swims below the weir, where the river deepens and gentle curves a bit. I made up a float rod, with a quill and a pin, double runnering the quill so I could change to a topper when I went back to the river. First cast in and I had a lovely roach, about 30z, Other cast produced roach form 1/2oz to about the same a s the first. Lovely fin perfect fish who have never been fished for before until this season, although some of their parents would have. Whilst it was very pleasant with the sun on my back, being out of the wind, it did seem a bit foolish to be fishing a pool, a hundred or so yrds from the river, on the last day of the season, so I wandered back to base camp, swithing the quill for a 6AAA topper, as the water was deep, but powerful, I plumbed up and found nearly 6 feet, but also that the river bed was preetty uneven, but a useful bit of knowledge for next summer. A bait dropper of maggies went in and I made my first trot, the float sank away first run down, thinking it was the uneven bottom, or the remains of the summer weed, I only gently lifted the rod, but the resluting bend was quite something, on the end was a very fit, chubby chub which put up a very good account of itself. It did however kill the swim off, and I had no more bites. My chub. ![]() I decided to have a look a little further downstream, and at JP's suggestion, took his spinning rod with me, and just as my other two methods of the day I had a fish on my first cast. Poor JP, no fishes so far. ![]() Not a huge fish, but obligingly tail walked ofr me, and like JP's PB last weekend, I saw it flash out of cover and hit the spinner, which mad it more fun. We decided to end the session at the weirpool, and it was here that JP did get amongst the fish, whilst I had no luck, other than some cold feet due to a new hole in my boots. JP hauled in three minnows. Whilst the weirpool is a fun place to fish, there had been some fly tipping going on on the far bank and one pratt had dumped an empty gas bottle into the river, this was caught in the backwash of the weir, and it kept banging against the metel work of the sluice, which was both trying on our ears and we also speculated if it may be putting the fish off? However it did not upset the Bullheads, JP, the crafty devil had a brace, so points for him and the Jolly Bass, which sounds suspiciously like a fishermans boozer........ ![]() We did decide to end the season on a swim known as the beach, no bites, but there was no nasty noise and a couple of shooting stars. Sadly no fishing for me for a bit til the evenings get a bit longer, then I plan to 'hoop some cane' with the Crockerton tench. __________________ Ignore the margins at your peril

Re: First, on the last, and a brace of bullheads Well, once Crockerton has its nice green colour back, then there will be enough light for some eveing sessions, they'll be fun. There's the odd fly fishing session to be done. And in aboiut 3 weeks I sense the need to try charmouth... __________________ Ignore the margins at your peril

Re: First, on the last, and a brace of bullheads As always I enjoyed reading your report Matt. NB. Nice to see that the 'Millers Thumb' (Bullhead) is still flourishing in your river. I very rarely see one these days. __________________ My Web Site (The Average Coarse Angler) Happiness is Fish Shaped (It used to be woman shaped but the wifes getting on a bit now)
