Frustrating end to the river season

I had booked three days off work, 10-13Th March, to have a go at the Ouse Zander, sadly my farther in law passed away last month and his funeral was on the 10Th March,

I kept the boys off school on the 11Th, but managed to get a few hours in late afternoon, (my missus and boys spending time with her mum and sister)

The river was looking perfect, flow and colour, and within an hour I had a 8lb Zander

I missed one run before it was time to get back to the family

I arrived first light on Friday, set up and settled down, I took my wide boy bed with me as I was totally knackered and hoped to doze during the day,

After setting up the shelter etc... tea etc was made and then the wind changed direction, so I had to reposition the shelter etc...then the river started to run off bringing with it all the rafts of debris from the dredging further up stream of the river Lark

I spent the next hour netting and guiding the debris away from my rods, I then had a run which after a decent scrap I landed a small Pike of 8-9lb. I had one other run which I hit but shortly after the hooks pulled out

I was fishing just down stream of the entrance to the Lark, the swim had a back eddy which resulted in all the debris I guided away coming back up stream into the swim, time to more swims

I moved fifty odd yards down stream and settled down to what I was hoping to be a chilled out remainder of the day, within 15 mins I had a run which I missed, five mins later I connected with a fish which put up a tremendous scrap, I was thinking it was going to be a pike but it was actually a 8.5lb Zander

Debris was still moving down stream but not at the volume as the previous swim, however, the wind got up for the rest of the day, the waves were over 18" at times and made bite detection very difficult,

I managed to miss two more runs and then finally connected with with the next one again the hooks pulled (gutted). I fished on for another couple of hours into dark but no more bites,

The end of my river campaign for this season, I have had a good season on the river and I am looking forward to the next season, probably trying for the Ouse Carp and elusive large Cats during the summer that are present

Hi Steve

I will always put a rod out for the Zander unless it is very hot, they suffer when the oxygen levels are low during the summer months, I am not keen on putting them through more stress than necessary

I will go 100% out for Zander late September, depending on the temperatures, through to the end of the season

Look forward to our next Zander meet

Darrell

Hi Ian

I have never fished for cats before, there are Cats in the Ouse, biggest caught that I know of has been over 30lb but there has also been some hooked and not landed by pike anglers including the SuffolkZander from this forum

The river is full of bait fish for the cats to grow large but the Fens system covers hundreds of mile of drains so they are thin on the ground

I will put one rod out for the cats, another for the large carp and Bream and if the weather is not too hot a rod for my favorite species the Zander

Darrell
