Re: River Stour (the Midlands one).

hello there, i have only just registered as a member because i have a bit of information for you. i recently went down the stour about 1 mile downstream of kiddy town centre. just before the 2nd lock. i was with my uncle and we were both legering lobworm. very simple tactics. we had 3 brown trout in the first swim to 1lb. then we moved 50yards downstream where we had 3 BARBEL to 7lb, 5 chub to 3lb and a couple more small brown trout. i couldnt believe the quality of the fishing as i havnt fished it for a couple of years and never this far downstream. i shall definatly be returning....

Re: River Stour (the Midlands one).

I've got to be honest I thought all this talk of barbel on the Stour was bull. Then I saw the video evidence and far too many people are reporting great sport on this tiny river down by Kiddy and beyond. One to watch I reckon.

Re: River Stour (the Midlands one).

Sounds like it is turning into a good Barbel river with good Chub and Trout it sounds like a healthy river.

Re: River Stour (the Midlands one).

It is a cracking little river being only at most 30 feet across and in many parts less than 20. Makes it ideal for those that find the severn (just round the corner and in fact the river the Stour empties in to ) a little intimidating . It does flow through the industrial heartland of the black country so does suffer from a lot of rubbish and the odd pollution (smells a bit sewagey sometimes). I'v enever found it any good when it is carrying any extra water but that just might be me :) Nice and close to me too so I will no doubt be down quite a bit this autumn and winter after dace and roach.

Re: River Stour (the Midlands one).

ive only fished it in the summer (im a bit of a fair weather angler). ive always caught fish. i know for a fact it holds chub, pike, perch, barbel, roach, dace, gudgeon, ruff, trout. the best peg ive fished is next to the scrapyard not too far away from a pub called the watermill. i had about 6 different species in one session including my personal best chub 5lb 12oz and a barbel. travel light enough to switch from peg to peg if you dont get a fish within an hour.

Re: River Stour (the Midlands one).

Many thanks for your input in this thread Poisson. Had a quick session after work today by the Lock pub, was a bite a chuck when I first started - chub to about 1lb, roach to 1/2lb and a beautifully coloured perch. All were taken on ledgered worm and I had to travel light & move around as the river was only about 20ft wide in most places & very shallow, so I must have been spooking the fish. Bumped something off that was pretty big, but not a barbel.
Brummy1308 - is it easy to get to and/or park where you fished by the second lock? Really would like to have a go for barbel in this river.

Re: River Stour (the Midlands one).

Benson, it depends if u know kiddy well. You can Park on Lyle Avenue which is off stourport road. walk to the bottom of lyle avenue, under the bridge and over the canal and turn left. its about a 5/10 min walk to the swims. the river runs parallel to the canal all the way down. you can find plenty of swims down there but some of them are difficult to get to. you can see where other anglers have bashed down the undergrowth just to get to the river. ive only been this far downstream once and i had 3 barbel and a few decent chub. i have also had a few barbel about a mile upstream of these swims. All of them in August/Sept time. hope this helps. The next time i go down i will be using the method feeder and pellets as i think this would be the best tactic for the barbel. All the others have been on legerd worm.

Re: River Stour (the Midlands one).

Thanks so much for the information - will give it a go when I next get a chance. Off camping this weekend so will have to wait a while. There is a fishing lake where we are camping, but I've no idea what's in there let alone how to catch them!
Would be nice to try catching some barbel without having to travel over to the Severn, I'll let you know how I get on.

As an alternative, drive into the Horsfair in Kiddy, right at the traffic lights and down the Hill (Broad Street), at the bottom turn left and before the road banks to the left you will see a bridge (goes over the canal) on your right, go over the bridge and park your car, if you stand with your back to the canal and look ahead 75 yards you have the Stour, to your left is a fence that goes around the Post office depot (I think) there are a couple of decent swims, one near the fence, one further right about 50 yards.

Hope you understood all that!
Cheers for that bit of info mate.I know where you mean i think, gonna give it a go with a mate of mine from brum who thinks theres nothing in the stour. I'll let you know how i get on! cheers
