Wet, Windy and Cold

Because of the weather last weekend and having to cancel the Ruffe Trip, I decided to go fishing this week, so I booked Friday off work due to the weather forecast stating that it was going to be dry with the odd shower.
As I awoke and opened the curtains the sky was a lovely shade purple as the first light was appearing with clear skies. By the time I was dressed and made my way downstairs and started to load the car, the skies changed to Dark and Scary with no sign of clear skies. “Bugger it” well I was up and dressed and my kit was loaded. So I set off to Berkley one of the Warminster waters. On arrival, the heavens opened so on with the waterproofs and the long trudge to the lake. Because the lake faces south, the Westerly wind howls along the lake and shelter is very limited on the lake, but I managed to find a sheltered area that kept me out of the wind for most of the day.

I set up the wagglar using another new purchase of a second hand rod from the 80’s/90’s “The Silstar Powerwind Match 13ft” {I am slowly building up a nice collection of old Silstar Rods. I just have a love of their rods.} On pluming the depth I found that I had 3ft of water in front of me, so I started slowly building up the swim by feeding gently, a few maggots every cast, and I was rewarded with bites and then some fish, nothing massive to start with but roach that gave a good count for themselves.

As the Morning progressed, the rain and wind continued to batter the landscape, but being in the sheltered area it didn’t affect my fishing too much. The bites started to become more frequent and then I was rewarded with some nice carp, nothing massive but enough to put a bend in the rod.

Considering the weather, I caught quite well and by 1pm, the Sun made appearance. But by 1:30, I saw another dark cloud approaching the lake, so it was time to stop for the day.

As I packed up and started to head back to the car I saw two other anglers who had snuck in. I thought it best to check them to make certain they were members, for which they were. In fact, they were Farther & Son who fish the match circuit and have fish Berkley for few years now. I used this opt unity to ask them if they had seen the purple carp that been caught. They both told me that the Purple carp have been in the lake for a few years and they were from when the lake was re-stocked after a pollution incident back 2004 and the strain of carp had the purple in them, the smaller ones are the results of the carp breeding. For which I am glad about as I was worried about the fish, but at least I now know it’s nothing to worry about!

Overall I had a good days fishing and it was nice to have a bend in my rod……
